Rodizio Grill: They have the meats!

By Doug Fox daily Herald - | May 21, 2015

There’s a popular — or alarmingly annoying, we guess, depending on how you look at it — television commercial for a prominent fast-food chain where a voice forcefully declares, “We have the meats!”

Well, that was the voice we kept hearing in our heads during a recent visit to Rodizio Grill — The Brazilian Steakhouse in American Fork. It’s probably the sign of a good advertising campaign when your slogan is remembered even while dining in a completely different establishment. But that was our experience as servers kept passing by our table with skewers of ever-tantalizing grilled meat options.

We should probably backtrack a bit. At Rodizio’s, a national chain with a couple Utah locations, your choices are very simple. Do you want to completely stuff yourself on plentiful salad bar options, or do you want to stuff yourself with an array of both salad bar and grilled meat selections? We, of course, opted for the latter — what would be the point, after all, of dining at a Brazilian steakhouse without sampling the meat?

The salad bar-only selection runs $18.99 while the combo offering costs $24.99. An extra $6 seemed like such a small upgrade to pay for a carnivorous merry-go-round of sorts. Drinks and dessert are both extra.

Our server brought us a complimentary dish of appetizers to get things started — as well as a little wooden tower painted green on one end and red on the other. Depending on which color was showing on top, a revolving door of servers would know whether to stop by your table with new meat temptations or whether you were trying to catch your breath. (You’re no doubt way ahead of me here, but red means “In the name of love, stop!” and green signals, “Hit me with your best shot!” In a manner of speaking.)

We momentarily put up the stop sign while sampling the salad bar — which did include a variety of delicious choices. Our favorite item was the Beef Stroganoff, which was served with a slightly tangy reddish sauce instead of the normal al fredo. There were plenty of salad toppings to tease our fancy — raisins, shredded carrots, onions, sunflower seeds, hard-boiled egg pieces, quail eggs and much more — as well as a variety of dressings (raspberry vinaigrette was our choice). But we certainly gave heed to the voice in our head which kept reminding, “Tread lightly, friend, there is tantalizing meat in your immediate future.”

The voice was correct. No sooner did we turn the wooden token to green side up than skewers of meat began appearing at a steady clip. By our count, we sampled nearly 12 different types of meat. Most of them were announced by their Brazilian names — which are lost to memory — but their taste and English equivalent remain seared in our subconscious several days after the fact.

Our favorites included turkey wrapped with bacon, glazed ham, tender beef, marinated chicken, pork with bacon, and top sirloin. Yum! Another great sample was the glazed pineapple. The only thing we really turned down was chicken hearts.

Something we appreciated late in our meal was the manager stopping by and asking if there was anything specific he could have brought by our table. At that point we requested additional helpings of top sirloin and glazed ham.

Even though we hadn’t really saved room, my wife and I did give in and order Rabanada for dessert. It’s a cream-filled cinnamon pastry drizzled in caramel, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some sliced strawberries.

Was this heaven? No it’s Rodizio’s.
