Lunch Ladies: Sweeto Burrito
There is a great deal on my mind as I write this article. Honestly, a lot more than the Lunch Ladies’ most recent lunch outing. But nonetheless, let me tell you about it.
I am going to first tell you about our excursion, then we’ll talk about the lunch itself. Because the seemingly inconsequential exchanges were just as valued as the good food we experienced. The restaurant worker who brought us our food took an extra minute to chat with us. She brought not only our meals but a friendly smile, some extra chatter and some kindness. The man sitting alone at a table exchanged a smile with me. Simple, quick and unnecessary. But genuine. The nice elderly woman who very sincerely thanked me for hurrying and cleaning up our table so her and her husband could have a booth like they preferred. It was no real effort on my part, but her genuine gratitude was touching. The kind mother who hurried at the drink station so I wouldn’t have to wait long. Also unnecessary, but definitely a polite courtesy, which I appreciated. And I noticed.
Now admittedly, on many a separate occasion I easily wouldn’t have noted the friendliness of the worker, the kindness of the mother, or perhaps would not have even noted the man sitting alone or the elderly woman eyeing the booth. And perhaps it was only because of Thanksgiving and the holiday season that I was a bit more appreciative, but I am glad I was.
The world is going crazy! More and more tragedies and travesties are occurring around the world every day. I highly doubt that there is a country or a people without its share of trauma in some way or another; those impacted by violence, natural disasters, cancer, heartache of loved ones and so much more. And yet, I can’t get off my mind how much humanity still exists in the simplest of ways.
Basically I just want to say thank you. Thank you to those who still shed the light of humanity and the love to their neighbor on a daily basis. Because that is what makes this Lunch Lady’s day brighter. And that is what made this specific lunch hour so great. The extra smiles, the human-to-human interaction, the people working hard to take my order, make my food with quality and deliver it with a smile.
And with that said, here is what the Lunch Ladies ordered:
Jennette: Buff Chick (middle weight), $6.00; Small Drink $2.00
I have a niece, Olivia, that loves to talk about food with me and all of the cool places that I get to go because of the Lunch Ladies. She tells me every time I talk to her that I should try the Buff Chick burrito from Sweeto Burrito, and honestly every time she told me that it had tater tots and chicken fingers in it I thought it sounded gross. Well I am happy to say that I finally listened to her and tried the Buff Chick and it was delicious! The burrito contains boneless crispy chicken, tater tots, cheddar cheese, cilantro ranch dressing and either buffalo sauce or sweet hot sauce. I chose the sweet hot sauce. Delicious. I think the sauce is what makes this combination work so well. I’m happy to say that Sweeto Burrito serves Diet Coke; it made the perfect combination with my burrito. I can’t wait to go back and try the other burritos!
Gabby: Bowler, $7.00
I was glad to see there were numerous options outside of a burrito (which isn’t gluten-free friendly). This bowl comes with your choice of meat and rice, black beans, shredded cheese, and two special sauces — a rather simple and straightforward makeup, but tasty nonetheless. I opted for the white rice and sweet pork, and I am very glad I did. Quite a few restaurants offer sweet pork these days, but the recipes seem to vary greatly. I really loved the pork in this dish! It wasn’t too sweet, and had a slight kick to balance it out. I also noted that the flavor was actually cooked into the meat and not just due to some sauce gooped all over it, which I loved! The two sauces poured on top were tasty and contrasting. One was a little more ranch flavored and one more salsa-based. Both worked well together to complement the pork, beans and rice. This meal was appetizing and though simple, got the job done. I think next time I go, I might see if I can get them to make one of the burritos on a bed of rice instead of in a tortilla, because there were just so many tempting options!
Janell: Steak Salad, $7.00; Tater Tots $3.00
Sweeto Burrito is all about wrapping up your favorite meal items in a tortilla. With that said, they have other options as well. I chose to have a steak salad and because I love tater tots, I got a side order of those as well. The salad came on a bed of tortilla chips with black beans, cheese, salsa, steak, homemade tortilla strips on top and a side of cilantro ranch dressing. The salad was large enough to fill me up for the great price of $7.00. There was enough dressing provided to cover the salad, with some left over for those who like more dressing than salad. The tots were salty, crispy, and tasted just right in fry sauce. There was talk around the lunch table that these just might be the best tots in the valley. With many meal options I would happily dine at Sweeto Burrito again and with a storefront I have a solid dining option.
We enjoyed our lunch hour. And most importantly, we enjoyed the brief moments that reminded us why the world, in all its turmoil, is still a place full of hope, kindness, little moments of love and definitely moments of great food!
