Savour Foods serves a variety of sliders, including this one, called The Wife.

You’re safe sliding into Savour Foods for its gourmet mini hamburgers served on a signature patty made of ground beef and pork shoulder with chopped bacon.

The slider idea itself represents an evolution in the grilling kingdom, and the savory food truck has created a monster. Well, three to be exact.

In its arsenal: The Wife, The Caprese and The Philly — all gourmet sliders with layers of flavors and served with one side dish all in a picnic paper boat.

Like chomping into a watermelon on a hot day, sinking your teeth into a Caprese slider is equally satisfying. Since I am a big fan of the caprese salad, and being a sucker for fresh basil, I took a chance on what my imagination built up as utter satisfaction.

One to two fresh medium-sized basil leaves, melty shredded mozzarella, a large, thick slab of tomato and Savour’s signature patty all orchestrate a symphony of sensations. A word to the wise, the Caprese is wonderfully juicy.

The water from the bitten garden tomato sloshes together with a creamy balsamic sauce and now you’ve gotten yourself into a delightful dilemma. With a paper boat in one hand and a once-bitten slider in the other, do you risk grabbing a napkin? Or free your hand by finishing off the mini burger? Either way, if you eat it right you’ll have to shake the juicy run-off from your hand after every bite, just like a huge wedge of summer watermelon.

Each entree comes with two sliders with a choice of French fries hand-tossed in truffle oil and topped with grated Parmesan or zucchini fritters stuffed with feta and garlic. Be sure to pair the fritter with the accompanying dipping sauce. It’s Savour’s house mayo seasoned with salt and pepper, garlic and fresh lemon zest — a match made in food truck heaven.

Savour offers a sample platter for $10 where eaters receive one slider from the three different options plus one side dish. It’s one of the best values on the menu considering any single slider by itself is $3.

There’s a saying about how limitations often nurture creativity and innovation. Well, few things embody that sentiment like a 2-by-2-inch edible canvas.

When it comes to The Wife slider, for example, you’ll first appreciate the beef, pork and bacon mix of the meaty patty. I suggest you get a mouthful on each bite, and bite to the center of the bun every time to get a little slice of tomato, fresh arugula and cheddar cheese at once.

The little surprise in this creation is the single slice of sweet pickle at the slider’s center. Oh, what a treat, especially with the slightly peppered taste finding its way through the leafy green arugula layer.

Savour Foods introduced its newest slider creation earlier this summer with The Philly menu item.

It’s a creative translation layered with three kinds of diced bell peppers on the top bun that’s lightly spread with a black pepper cream cheese. It’s got the grilled mushrooms. It’s got the provolone and onions. It’s got your mouth watering now, I bet. The signature patty and this classic favorite theme go hand-in-hand, or hand-to-mouth you might say.

It’s easy to underestimate the economical delivery system the slider affords the serious food truck foodie. They’re little samples of culinary art with a depth of subtlety that fills you up.

I know. “It’s just a small hamburger, so what?”

Only to the unenlightened does a slider from Savour ever compare to a meager meaty morsel, ground and grilled and shoved in a bun. No. It’s more. The only thing is, you won’t know if I’m correct unless you try it yourself.

As you’re wandering food truck row at your next outdoor community event, consider the flavor fireworks served by Savour. Grip the slider with two hands and bite to the middle of the bun for the full effect. Take two and come back again in the morning.
