‘Elena of Avalor’ coming to Disney Channel
Disney’s newest princess is Elena, a headstrong 16-year-old who is learning how to rule her kingdom.
Avalor is an enchanted land filled with magic and interesting characters. “Elena of Avalor,” which premieres Friday, is infused with Latin music and culture along with a healthy dose of Disney magic.
For 41 years, Elena and her sister Isabel and grandparents have been in a state of limbo, literally. Elena was held captive in a magic amulet, and Isabel and their grandparents were vanquished into a painting, all by an evil sorcerer. Now after all these years, they are all free and Elena is preparing to be the queen. There’s only one problem, she isn’t ready to take control of the land just yet, so she is satisfied with being crowned princess until she is ready to lead.
If you are familiar with Disney Junior’s “Sofia the First” you have heard of the land of Avalor. Sofia’s amulet that allows her to talk to animals is the Amulet of Avalor. This fall, Disney Channel will air a special TV movie titled “Elena and the Secret of Avalor,” which explains how Elena was imprisoned for decades in her magical amulet and eventually set free by Princess Sofia of Enchancia.
The first episode in this new series, “First Day of Rule,” sets the magic tone for this fairy tale land. Elena is anxious to help everyone in her kingdom and comes across some shapeshifting creatures known as Noblins. They too were unjustly treated by the evil sorcerer. She proves she is worthy of the crown, however, she knows she needs some time before she takes over, so she and the Grand Council (Francisco, her grandfather, Luisa, her grandmother, Duke Esteban, her older cousin, and Naomi, her new friend) will help guide her on the path to becoming Queen. And Elena also has Zuzo, an animal spirit guide to help steer her in the right direction.
As the series progresses, Elena discovers the magic in her “scepter of light,” a beautiful glowing scepter that gives her special powers. Also, the flying creatures called jaquins (Luna, Skylar, and Migs) will continue to be at her side. They are half bird and half jaguar and very colorful.
Magic, mythology and folklore come into play in this series as Disney presents its first Latin princess. Elena learns not only how to lead, but also the importance of family, friends and self. She wants to do her best at everything and that involves making the right decisions.
“Sofia the First” airs on Disney Junior and “Elena of Avalor” airs on Disney Channel. Sofia, Elena and Isabel are all Disney princesses alongside Cinderella, Snow White and the others. As a matter of fact, Elena is making her debut at The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in August and California Adventure in Disneyland Resort soon after.
With the introduction of “Elena of Avalor,” two new princesses join the ranks of Disney princesses. Elena and Isabel are both going to be hits with fans. “Elena of Avalor” premieres Friday.
