Drive-Thru Gourmet: BK fixes its chicken sandwich mistake

By Ken Hoffman - | Apr 7, 2017

This week I reached out for a new and improved, though slightly smaller and more simply named, Crispy Chicken Sandwich at the world’s runner-up burger barn, Burger King, with 15,000 restaurants dotting our crazy, spinning orb.

Hey, maybe for once, less really is more. In a rare moment of self-awareness, Burger King officials owned up to serving a chicken sandwich trolled on social media as “disgusting” and “gross.” So the gang in research and development came up with a new, marinated, whole breast fillet that’s, well, not disgusting or gross — a low hurdle to clear, but Burger King did it.

Here’s the Crispy Chicken Sandwich breakdown: a 4-ounce whole chicken fillet, marinated and breaded and deep fried, topped with lettuce, tomato and mayo, on a potato bun.

Total calories: 670. Fat grams: 41 g. Sodium: 1,070 mg. Carbs: 54 g. Dietary fiber: 4 g. Protein: 23 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $4.39.

The new Crispy Chicken Sandwich replaces the once-touted TenderCrisp Chicken Sandwich, which Burger King now admits wasn’t all that. Wonder what else on the current menu BK management knows needs to go?

The new Crispy Chicken Sandwich is marinated in a different potion and cooked with a new process that makes the outer breading crunchier and the inside breast juicier.

In its latest TV spots, Burger King shows the creepy King leading blindfolded suckers, er, social-media critics into a BK to test the new chicken sandwich. Naturally, they rave. And I’ve got to say, I agree with them. The new Crispy Chicken beats its predecessor by 20 lengths coming down the home stretch. It’s better in every way: flavor and texture and overall appeal.

It’s no wonder Burger King is upping its premier chicken sandwich. Wendy’s has been killing it for years with its Spicy Chicken Sandwich, McDonald’s is going gangbusters with its Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich, and Chick-fil-A is an absolute money-printing press with its plain, pickles-only chicken sandwich.

Burger King is keeping on the menu its low-budget Original Chicken Sandwich, made with a processed, glued ‘n’ chewed oblong chicken patty. If customers thought the TenderCrisp Chicken Sandwich, made with a whole fillet, was “disgusting” and “gross” …

In other Burger King doings, the burger giant just bought Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, makers of spicy, Cajun-style fried chicken and one of the hottest, fastest-growing companies in the drive-thru business. Smooth move, King.

Starting at $4.32/week.
