Lehi’s around.eatery melds lowercase with upper crust
Among the things that around.eatery in Lehi does well are trendy and healthy menu choices, quick service, a clean environment and, apparently, extremely pure water.
Something around.eatery doesn’t do well? Capitalization. Of anything.
OK, we get that the no-capitalization policy is clearly part of the restaurant’s shtick — but when someone writes and edits for a living, not finding capital letters anywhere you read can be a bit of a jarring experience. (In fairness, there were a few capitals in a couple acronyms on a large wall display touting the restaurant’s dedicated approach to water filtration and purification.)
The no-caps approach starts with the around.eatery name, as well as its followup tagline: chef. crafted. eats. It continues with the menu, displays and online content.
Is there a secret connection between lowercase letters and great food? We don’t think so. But if there were, you could add your own exclamation points as warranted.
This around.eatery location opened up in the burgeoning Terrace at Traverse Mountain business district in August. It caught our eye several months ago when we first stumbled across all the new restaurants in the area, and we’ve been looking forward to having the opportunity to visit.
The restaurant is decently sized, with seating for around 80 in a non-cramped environment. Orders are placed at the front counter and then brought to your table after the food is prepared. There were many intriguing options on the menu — mainly drawing from the sandwiches, soups and salad genres, but also ranging to premium, healthy and burger title sections. The restaurant also offers an array of espressos and lattes in addition to smoothies and shakes. It also boasts a breakfast menu for those wishing to get a healthy start to their day.
As always, it took us several minutes to get our bearings and place our orders. Customer service was excellent, and our server answered our questions and made a few suggestions as well.
I couldn’t resist the Valley Cheese Steak, which boasted of being Philly authentic. There were hearty slices of slow-cooked, smoked beef mixed with an array of red and green peppers, caramelized onions, mushrooms and cheddar cheese sauce — all served on a toasted amoroso bread roll. This sandwich was indeed a handful. Incidentally, all the main entrees are served with pita chips and hummus. It all combined for a very full meal.
My wife ordered the B.A.T. — a bacon, alfalfa and tomato sandwich. The only problem was the restaurant was out of alfalfa. Oh, well, back to lettuce. The sandwich was still dressed up nicely with delicious, crunchy bacon, roma tomatoes, and a house aioli sauce. The ciabatta bun was pressed panini style for a warm presentation.
Our teenage daughter opted for the Cobb Salad, which featured iceberg and romaine lettuce, bacon, cherry tomatoes, gorgonzola cheese, croutons and was topped with a fried egg. The restaurant was out of its accompanying avocado lime ranch dressing, so it came instead with a standard ranch.
My wife and I shared the Chicken Spatzle Dumpling soup. This tasted all right, but seemed a bit lacking considering we could not find any dumplings in it.
I ordered a Dulce de Leche Shake — which I thoroughly enjoyed. The shake was augmented with a layer of whipped cream and caramel drizzle making it a pretty perfect combination.
There were a bevy of other menu items that sounded great to us, but it would probably take several visits to sample everything that caught our eye. Judging by what we did have, it would be worth further investigation.
