Drive-Thru Gourmet: BK’s Steakhouse King reigns supreme
This week I reached out for a Steakhouse King, the latest premium sandwich from the No. 2 burger slinger, Burger King, with 15,000-plus restaurants ’round the world. And yeah, I’m calling a burger a sandwich. End of argument.
You know Burger King — the bargain-basement burger barn, with two Whopper meals for $10, three large pancakes for 89 cents and 10 chicken nuggets for $1.50.
The Steakhouse King has other ideas. It’s the flame-kissing cousin of BK’s Bacon King hit, and the most expensive burger on the big board.
Here’s the Steakhouse King breakdown: two all-beef, 1/4-pound patties, three half-strips of thick-cut smoked bacon, American cheese, crispy onion strings, creamy mayo and A.1. Thick & Hearty sauce on a sesame-seed bun.
Total calories: 1,100. Fat grams: 75. Sodium: 1,620 mg. Carbs: 59 g. Dietary fiber: 2 g. Protein: 50 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $5.99 for the burger, $8.29 for the combo meal with fries and a soda.
This two-hander really is a big’un — more than a grand of calories and a ridiculous 75 fat grams. Throw in some fries and a new Froot Loops shake — you heard that right, a Froot Loops shake — and you’ve got more than the recommended amount of everything for a whole day. Thanks, lunch. It doesn’t matter if it’s 5 o’clock somewhere … you’re already in diet-bustin’ territory.
You can cut your losses by holding the mayo — which never has been worth 170 calories and 19 fat grams, especially when you’ve got A.1. steak sauce glopping up the burger.
Burger King has tossed around the “steakhouse” moniker before, like with the Jalapeno & Cheddar Stuffed Smokehouse Burger in 2011. But each time, it involved gimmicked, finagled slabs of beef. Not with the Steakhouse King — those are two regular ol’ Whopper patties. No problem there, we’ve been grooving on that flame-broiled Whopper flavor for a long, long time.
Each Steakhouse King is prepared to order; they don’t keep a batch of them pre-assembled under a heat lamp. These aren’t movie-theater burgers. You’re getting a half-pound of beef, bacon and cheese, plus a mess o’ toppings. You’re not getting cheated out of those calories, and whoa, that’s a lot of salt. Hope you’re dining in at a BK with free soda refills.
The King has been on a roll lately, with new products being churned out of research and development, and cash registers humming. There’s something for everybody’s taste and wallet, from the cut-rate value menu (big fan of two cheeseburgers, fries and a drink for $3.29) to this mighty big Steakhouse King for $5.99.
