Drugs are like cookies.

Cookies are more addictive.

Emily and Ryan Burraston would know, as the Spanish Fork couple opened a new cookie shop, The Cookie Crave, in downtown Spanish Fork in the last two months.

Both Emily and Ryan are longtime Spanish Fork residents, having graduated from Spanish Fork High, and then eventually raised their own family there, too.

The Cookie Crave came to be after Emily’s sugar cookie decorating took off from her website http://www.emscookies.com and baking took over their house. Her iced sugar cookies look like individual works of art. These days she stays booked out a month or two in advance for larger, special orders.

Luckily, sweet tooths can visit Cookie Crave as often as they want to grab a cookie without a wait. The couple’s downtown Spanish Fork store, sandwiched in between other businesses, focuses beyond sugar cookies with at least six different flavors available each day made in small batches.

As Ryan put it when a customer asked him how his day was going, he said, “I’m making cookies for a living so it can’t get much better.”

Who can disagree with that?

On the afternoon I dropped in, Ryan walked me through the different takes: milk chocolate chip (for those that still don’t understand that semi-sweet is superior), salted caramel, lime white chocolate chip, semi-sweet chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, peanut butter oat and chocolate chip and a keto chocolate chip (totaling four carbs).

You could call me a cookie connoisseur.

I’d choose a cookie over a slice of cake, cupcake accompanying a mound of frosting, a giant cone of ice cream, a soda or a donut any and every day of the week.

The Cookie Crave is a simple place, but cookies don’t have to be overtly complicated to warm your soul.

I enjoyed every single cookie.

Now before you think I gorged myself on at least six of these nearly 1-inch high monster cookies — I did not, though it wasn’t for a lack of desire.

Picking a favorite among their cookies is akin to a parent being put on the spot to select their most favorite child. You love them all equally, but some days you can appreciate one perhaps more than another.

The cookies all had a bit of a crisp crunch on the outside paired with the perfect softness in the middle. The salted caramel is a favorite among customers, and that’s easy to understand. The caramel bits are gooey and the salt balances out the cookie so it’s not overly sweet. You cannot go wrong with either chocolate chip cookie; it fulfills everything from your taste buds to a bite of Americana.

I liked Cookie Crave’s take on a peanut butter cookie — which is one of the flavors that gets switched out on a daily basis among other specials. The peanut butter combined with chocolate chips and oats gave it a more unique texture compared to a normal, plain peanut butter cookie. I liked this hearty, jazzed-up version and will likely use it as a new standard for all peanut butter cookies I try in the future.

In a balanced lineup, the lime white chocolate chip provides a fresh, fruity option among some of the more rich semi-sweet and milk chocolate cookies.

While our experience was entirely and simply focused on the cookies, it should be noted that visitors can order other options like a Crave A La Mode, consisting of freshly baked dough topped with ice cream; Macs A La Mode, macaron ice cream sandwiches made by a fellow local operation; and various beverages.

For those outside of Spanish Fork, is it worth the short drive?

Well, is the sky blue?
