Utah’s food pyramid as determined by some of our state’s most go-to food

By Jordan Carroll daily Herald - | May 22, 2018

Historically, Utah has been known for random food followings like green Jell-O, and others that are still prevalent today like funeral potatoes and fry sauce.

While the food pyramid has been switched for the more modern-based nutrition guidelines of MyPlate, a food pyramid in some version was used to explain diets from 1992-2011.

Americans mostly know what they should be eating, but what are Utahns actual favorites and go-to meals? While this is not scientific in any way, we came up with what food we feel Utahns prioritize.

Utah’s food pyramid

You’ll notice the base is comprised of soda. Don’t try and argue with us here, (unless you’re in the belief that Costco’s food court could also serve as the foundation). Utah is home to many, many soda huts, drive-thrus, gas stations and even food trucks offering super-sized sodas with custom flavor mixings.

The second and third food groups consist of pizza and chicken nuggets. Utah has some of the youngest population in the nation, and with that comes catering to their taste buds. There are far more than 25 pizza joints in Utah County alone.

The fourth and fifth food groups are represented by Utah’s love of potatoes with funeral potatoes and fry sauce, as well as shaved ice. Come warm weather, it’s impossible for every major corner to not be dotted with a shaved ice hut.

At the very top of the pyramid is what Utah holds most holy: ice cream. Whether its from the BYU Creamery, a carton from the store, or a cone from a local shop, we love our frozen dessert.

What do you think? Do these food groups represent Utah’s tendencies?

Starting at $4.32/week.
