If time or travel keeps you from vacationing in Mexico, a trip to Don Chuy’s Taco Shop in Provo might prove to be a satisfactory substitute.

My first observation upon entering the restaurant was the uncomfortable heat inside compared to the cool, air-conditioned car I had just exited. But the temperature soon became an afterthought once I got a taste of Don Chuy’s authentic Mexican food, which extends far beyond the tacos in the title.

Our server was friendly and patient with our party of four as we decided on what we’d like to order, giving us helpful tips about the restaurant’s most popular and delicious menu items. We then sat at an indoor table in the shade while we waited for our food, and I’m happy to say the results were delicious.

One of us ordered a Three Street Tacos Plate with three different kinds of meat: carne asada, adobada and shredded beef. Each was well-cooked and flavorful, served with diced onion atop small, soft tortillas.

We also ordered a Beef Chimichanga Plate, another appetizing entree with a perfectly fried golden exterior served with sour cream, guacamole and shredded cheese.

My Carne Asada Plate was served with two large, warm homemade tortillas and small servings of pico de gallo, guacamole and lettuce. The meat on its own, though well-seasoned, was a little dry, tough and hard to cut, but tasted amazing combined with the other elements on the plate inside the soft, tasty tortillas.

The Crispy Taco and Enchilada combination we ordered was also yummy, served with tender meat and a good amount of red sauce, lettuce and shredded cheese on top. All of us also enjoyed the flavorful refried beans and red rice that came with our orders.

Don Chuy’s also offers a variety of smoothies, which proved too tempting for me not to try. I ordered the Tropicolada smoothie, a strawberry, mango and pina colada combination that was perfectly sweet, fresh and extremely delicious.

I also got a taste of Don Chuy’s jamaica drink, served alongside the restaurant’s fountain drinks, which I thought was perfectly sweet, cool and refreshing.

We also tried all of Don Chuy’s churro flavors: plain, cream, caramel, Oreo and strawberry. Though the cinnamon-clad churros all tasted a little crunchier than we would have liked, it was fun to try the variety of fillings, and the desserts satisfied our sweet tooth. I also felt the crunchy exterior on the Oreo churro complemented its flavor, making the dark outside taste like a crunchy Oreo cookie, contrasted with the white cream filling.

Overall, Don Chuy’s flavorful Mexican fare proved to be a delicious destination to send off summer in Provo.
