Covey Center stages ‘Glorious!’ Florence Foster Jenkins comedy
Provo’s Covey Center for the Arts is retelling the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins in a production of “Glorious!” this month.
The 2005 Peter Quilter play, which was nominated for a 2006 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, follows Jenkins’ life as a socialite known in 1920s-40s New York City as the world’s worst singer.
“She really rarely hit a right note,” said Jennifer Mustoe, who plays Jenkins in the production. “She’s awful, but she’s determined. … She had money, and she decided to go for it and do what she wanted, and she did.”
Mustoe said she hopes people come to the show ready to laugh and walk away in love with Jenkins, seeing her for the icon she was.
“Trying to get through my songs without laughing is one of my big challenges, so I want people to laugh,” Mustoe said. “This is a story of joy.”
Performances are set for Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through May 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Covey Center for the Arts, 425 W. Center St., Provo. Tickets are available for $14-$16 at the Covey Center box office, by calling (801) 852-7007 and online at coveycenter.org.
