"The Real Love Boat" debuts on CBS on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2022.

“Love, exciting and new. Come aboard. We’re expecting you.” Those are the memorable first lines from the hit series “The Love Boat” that aired from 1977-1987. Today, CBS has a reality series based on the popular series. With hosts Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romijn, the series is set on a cruise ship with real-life couples and cruise staff as they sail in gorgeous locations. The title song for Romijn and O’Connell, who also happen to be married to one another, sing the title song.

Recently, the couple met virtually with the media to discuss their show. They both admitted they love watching reality shows, so doing this was a delight.

“Watching love stories happen, like, real love stories happen in front of our eyes, it was very exciting. We were in the most beautiful locations in the world, the most incredible challenges and incredible people, real people, watching connections happen. It was a real front-row experience for us,” Romijn told members of the media.

O’Connell added, “We love unscripted reality television. We love competition television, ‘Survivor,’ ‘Amazing Race.’ So when they came to us, you know, Rebecca had hosted one competition show before — ‘Skin Wars’ — I had never. But when they came to us as a couple, we just couldn’t pass it up. It was just too much of an opportunity.”

O’Connell admitted he had a hard time not getting emotional when people were eliminated from the competition. As a host, he was tasked to stay neutral, though it became difficult when he became invested in the couples.

“The connection between the original ‘Love Boat’ and our new ‘Real Love Boat’ is people looking for a second chance at love, people whose hearts have been broken, who are looking for a second chance at love,” Romijn said.

The show was filmed aboard the Regal Princess in the Mediterranean. Besides being in a beautiful location and experiencing the enjoyment of the ship, there was an added allure that remains in O’Connell’s memory. “There’s something so romantic about cruising because there’s nothing to do but be conscious of yourself and those who are around you.” Both of them admitted they slept like babies while on the ship.

“I just want to say this show is very near and dear to our hearts,” Romijn said. “Jerry and I are children of the 80s. We watched the original ‘Love Boat.’ We wanted to bring back the same warm feelings that the original show brought with this new ‘Real Love Boat.’ We are thrilled.”

“The Real Love Boat” sets sail Wednesday on CBS.
