"Karen Pirie" is streaming now on BritBox.

BritBox’s original Scottish crime drama, “Karen Pirie,” stars Lauren Lyle in the title role. She is a no-nonsense detective who is tasked with a cold case. After a true-crime podcaster shines a light on an unsolved murder, Pirie is put in charge of the new investigation.

Apparently, Pirie got the job because she is a woman, which frustrates her to no end. She wants her abilities to stand on their own; however, she is determined to solve this crime no matter what it takes or whose toes she steps on. She immediately begins to unravel everything associated with the decades-old crime.

The story is set in St. Andrews. Incidentally, St. Andrews University became famous when Prince William attended and met his wife, Catherine Middleton. But that love story aside, this murder mystery brings up a lot of history around the murdered girl’s family, friends and lovers. The show was filmed at historical sites in and around St. Andrews.

“Normally, as the public, you can’t touch and go near a lot of these buildings anymore because they’re all, like, national heritage sites,” Lyle informed the media. “So the fact that we were even able to get on it and go near and, like, touch the walls that those same people that in — I don’t know — the year 500 touched was amazing.”

Pirie often uses the research of the podcaster. However, sometimes putting suspicion on the wrong suspect via social media can lead to horrific consequences. Nevertheless, the podcaster and Pirie get along and both have the same goal — to solve the murder.

“I have my own podcast called ‘She’s a Wreck,’ so I’m all for podcasts,” Lyle said. “And I think it’s actually such a clever medium and anchor to tell the story because it’s such an immediate source of reaching an audience. And, like, everyone in the world that you speak to now, true-crime podcasts are so huge that everyone wants to get the next one, that it really is like a very effective way to reach people.” As many viewers know, a popular Hulu show, “Only Murders in the Building,” revolves around true-crime podcasters.

The show is intense and keeps viewers watching and wondering who the murderer is. It’s done very well and Lyle is great in this role. As she stated, “It’s set in Scotland, but I don’t feel like it’s a Scottish story. I feel like it’s a universal story.”
