"Beyond Paradise" premieres on BritBox on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023.

“Beyond Paradise” is the new spinoff from the hit BritBox series “Death in Paradise.” In this series, Kris Marshall reprises his role of DI Humphrey Goodman, who has been away from the Caribbean for several years by now and is firmly committed to his fiancé, Martha (Sally Bretton), and his new job back in the United Kingdom.

While the scenery has changed, Goodman has not. He is the same bumbling klutz he was in the Caribbean and always manages to put the clues together to solve the case. What makes this series different is the goal to make it “more personal,” according to Marshall.

“It’s its own beast,” the actor told members of the press. Yet, the story “retains the same sort of fundamental points about Humphrey,” which is exactly what viewers want.

“Death in Paradise” has been a fan favorite since it debuted in 2011 and continues to entertain viewers with its charm and eclectic characters. Although many of the same elements are there, Marshall made it clear this show is “not a rehash.”

Marshall hasn’t portrayed Humphrey Goodman since 2017 after 30 episodes of “Death in Paradise.” He had reservations about reprising the character, but those concerns were “quickly allayed.”

As beautiful as it was filming the original series in the Caribbean, it was, at times, a challenge due to weather conditions. That’s one reason he enjoyed filming in Southern England, his home territory.

“The U.K. has wonderful beaches,” he said. But he did add, “It’s not the Caribbean.” In any case, “Beyond Paradise” is a fun and clever series that maintains much of the same entertaining aspects of the original series while adding a more human side to the characters and storylines.

“Beyond Paradise” premieres Friday on BritBox.

Starting at $4.32/week.
