Karen PirieBased on the novel by best-selling author Val McDermid, the second season of the tense Scottish police drama “Karen Pirie” delivers plenty of mystery and intrigue as detective Pirie is put in charge of a 25-year-old kidnapping case.
Laura Lyle portrays the young, competent, and dedicated detective who is determined to solve the crime. This mystery plays out over the three episodes of season two.
Over two decades earlier a young heiress and her baby son were taken, but the circumstances around their abduction were sketchy. When a body is discovered in a quarry, Pirie and her team start delving into the past case, with the feeling that this newly discovered body is somehow connected to the earlier kidnapping.
Sir Brodie Grant (James Cosmo) is a high profile and highly respected man whose oil empire has brought about the contempt of environmentalists. The kidnapping of his daughter Catriona and grandson is one of the most famous cases in Scotland, so when, after over two decades, the case has not been solved, the family has doubts they will ever know what happened to Catriona.
While she begins investigating this cold case, Pirie discovers there are many inconsistencies. No bodies were ever found. No contact between the family and the kidnappers led to any conclusions. Or did they and the truth has been hidden for 25 years?
There are many puzzle pieces the team puts together as they dig deeper into Catriona’s life. Things are not adding up for Pirie.
As the picture becomes clearer to her, the clues lead her out of Scotland where, after all these years, the truth begins to unravel. All the players in this little drama have been hiding their secrets and now Pirie is going to expose the truth.
Each episode builds on the previous one, and the third episode brings this case, finally, to a close. The truth, however, is startling.
Karen Pirie is a formidable character whose grit and determination have led her to her new position of Detective Sergeant. Although she is young, she proves that she is capable of unraveling the toughest cases and bringing criminals to justice.
Lyle plays Pirie with a sense of purpose. She is an engaging character that is impressive, talented, intuitive, and smart. “Karen Pirie” is definitely worth watching for viewers who enjoy mysteries and police dramas.
