Pryce Cahill (Wilson) is an ex-pro golfer who left the sport 20 years ago after a public meltdown that is now visually playing out on social media and even commercials. Since his “retirement” he has been a salesman in a sporting goods store. This man has the gift of gab and can sell anything to anyone. He knows everything about the sport and had personal things in his past played out differently, he might have been the number one golfer in the country.

When he discovers a 17-year-old hitting amazing shots on a driving range, Pryce is stunned at the natural talent of this young kid. He immediately sees a new venture for himself. Pryce has been spinning out of control in his private life and his ex-wife Amber-Linn (Judy Greer) wants him to find something he will feel passionate about.

Pryce approaches Santi Wheeler (Peter Dager), who is not only a great driver of golf balls but has a unique way about him and an interesting view of life. The former pro decides he wants to coach Santi and take him to the top of the amateur tournaments.

Santi’s mother Elena (Mariana Treviño) is a little hesitant. She insists Pryce gives her one hundred thousand dollars and pay for all their expenses on the road if they agree to spending the summer preparing Santi for a future in golf. This sounds far-fetched but Pryce is adamant he can take Santi all the way if he will listen to his coaching and take his advice. That might not be easy as Santi has a mind of his own.

With the deal set they need a way to get from Indiana to the various tournaments around the country. Enter Mitts (Marc Maron), Pryce’s former caddie who just happens to own a large motor home.

Mitts and Pryce are best buddies and together have pulled off several grifts to make money. Mitts has a heart of gold and would do anything to help.

As the four start their journey they encounter a young woman who has an interesting effect on Santi. Zero (Lilli Kay) is unconventional and a free spirit. Santi, a kid with a chip on his shoulder (no pun intended), responds to her better than to anyone else. To keep his young talent happy and on the right track, Pryce offers Zero a job caddying for Santi. There is a caveat that comes with the job, however. (No spoiler here!)

As the season progresses the backgrounds of each of these characters come to light. Viewers finally understand what happened to Pryce all those years ago. They also get a better understanding of Santi’s feelings about golf and coaches and why he has a hard time trusting people. He had a psychological trauma that is exposed at the end of the season. Nevertheless, Santi is a golf phenom.

While family relationships play out and this new group of five find their footing in the quest to make Santi one of the greatest golfers, everyone must confront their pasts in order to get on with their lives.

This is a good show to binge over a weekend. Having all 10 episodes available makes for a fun weekend for those who are not out on the golf course themselves. It is unusual to have a show dedicated to the sport.

“Stick” brings viewers into the world of golf with some interesting characters. Watch it on Apple TV+.
