Last year, viewers were treated to the wondrous and dangerous journey of Eva 9, who was raised underground in a bunker after a catastrophic event made living on the surface impossible for humans.
Eva had only the company of Muthr, a robot who taught her about life and gave her the skills she would need to survive. After the bunker was attacked, Eva made her way to the surface, where she was determined to find other humans.
When we left off last season, Eva had indeed discovered she was not the only human on Earth. With the help of a giant water bear named Otto and an alien called Rovender, Eva finally found another human named Cadmus Pryde who built New Attica, a utopian community for all humans.
When she arrives at New Attica, Eva is at first ecstatic to be among other humans, but she soon discovers this utopian community is not as great as it looks. It is an amazing place but something is not right, and Eva’s initial delight quickly turns to distrust and doubt as she feels uneasy about everything and everyone.
Then Eva discovers her “sister” Eva 8, who leads her to others who had been raised underground and are also wary of New Attica. They have been hiding from Cadmus and living by themselves, rarely venturing into the community. They have suspicions about Eva as well due to her ability to converse telepathically with aliens.
After hearing Otto’s plea for help, Eva must rescue Otto and Rovender, who have been abducted. Once rescued, they all realize they must leave New Attica and return to the surface. Something sinister is going on in this supposed Utopia. After escaping New Attica, the trio, along with Eva 8, discover there are nefarious plans afoot by Cadmus. Eva 9 feels more comfortable among the aliens than she did with the humans, so she decides to stay on the surface with her “friends” who are now her new family.
The animation in this series is amazing and the scenery is beautiful and at times breathtaking. With the various aliens and flora and fauna the colors are magnificent. It is indeed a visually stunning interpretation of the books.
As Eva and her friends fight for survival, viewers will sense the impending danger and possible doom for many of the characters. Eva’s original intent last season was finding other humans, but now she must find a way to survive and make things right. Can she do this? Last season this young 16-year-old proved her guts, wit, loyalty and caring personality. She will do anything to help her friends and family. The season ends with a cliff-hanger leaving viewers a little anxious for the next installment next year.
There are seven episodes in this season. Parents need to keep in mind there are some perilous and often sad situations throughout the story; however, Eva is a spirited hero and a delightful role model for young viewers. In Eva, they see a girl who is filled with love, devotion, curiosity and most of all desire to find out what happened to Earth. Viewers will have to wait for the third installment to learn how the planet turned into what it has become and why humans were sent underground.
“WondLa” streams on Apple TV+. It is a fantasy, sci-fi adventure beautifully produced with many characters that will touch the hearts of viewers as the story plays out.
