The Last Frontier

Beginning Oct. 10, viewers are in for a gritty and dramatic ride with the Apple TV+ original series “The Last Frontier.” The setting is Fairbanks, Alaska, and the barren and frigid surroundings.

Jason Clarke stars as U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick whose job has been pretty tame until a plane crashes in the rugged wilderness outside of town. The plane is a prison transport and when it crashes the prisoners all make a run for freedom. Rounding up the remaining prisoners — those who did not die in the crash and those who died while initially fighting off the Marshalls — is not the only problem facing Remnick. It seems there was another passenger on the plane that is in the crosshairs of the CIA and the FBI.

The ten episodes are filled with drama and surprises. While hunting down the escaped violent prisoners who are causing havoc and death in the area, the FBI and CIA are also involved. CIA Agent Sidney Scofield (Haley Bennett) arrives in town with an agenda. She is hunting Havlock (Dominic Cooper), a former CIA agent who posses a threat to national security. He has a hard drive with all the inner secrets of the CIA, including their agents’ names and locations. If this secret file gets out, the covert agents as well as their agendas will be compromised. And the secrets of the agency will no longer be hidden. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

As the episodes roll on, the people of Fairbanks are subjected to the atrocities of the escaped prisoners. Hunting them is easier than hunting Havlock, who is cunning and always one step ahead of the law. Scofield is caught in the middle. She trained him and knows how good he is at hiding and playing games with them. He was actually brilliant in his execution of his escape, but he is also an enigma as he gets closer to Remnick and his family.

Each episode brings up new complications for everyone, including Sarah Remnick (Simone Kessell), who wants her husband to choose between his job and his family. Their son Luke (Tait Blum) gets wrapped up in the horrific actions of one escapee, and one by one people get killed or injured by the vicious convicts who have nothing to lose if they are apprehended.

Alfre Woodward is the CIA chief who desperately wants to stop Havlock at all costs and retrieve the hard drive and the important files that could ruin her career. She knows how cunning he is and fears he will ruin the agency, and more importantly, her.

These episodes need to be seen in order as they build on each other. The personal history of Remnick slowly comes to light as he confronts this dangerous situation. In the beginning he is leery of Scofield, but as time goes on they know they have to work together if they are going to capture Havlock.

The final few episodes reveal secrets of Remnick, Havlock, Scofield, and others in this often-intricate puzzle pitting good against evil. But who are the good guys and who are the bad ones? All is revealed in the explosive finale.

Starting at $4.32/week.
