Beyond Paradise 3

“Beyond Paradise” is the hit spinoff of the popular BritBox series “Death in Paradise.” The third season is now streaming with Kris Marshall returning as DI Humphrey Goodman and Sally Bretton as his fiancé Martha.

Zahra Ahmadi also returns as DS Esther Williams along with Dylan Llewellyn as PC Kelby Hartford and Barbara Flynn as Martha’s mother Anne Lloyd. The whole cast is back to solve crimes and muddle through their personal lives and relationships in the fictional town of Shifton Abbott in Devon, England. In reality, most of the series is filmed in Looe, Cornwall. It’s a beautiful location with picturesque scenery providing both village and sea surroundings.

In the second season Humphrey and Martha swapped their living arrangements with her mother so they cold be foster parents. They now live in her large house while Anne resides in their boat.

This season has Humphrey and Martha fostering a young girl named Rosie (Bella Rei Blue Stevenson) while her mother is in rehab. It takes a while for the couple to form a bond with her, but as they share more and more time, they become a close-knit “family.” They all love each other, however being foster parents is not a permanent situation. It is hard to get close to someone only to have to leave them in time. That goes for both the children and the adults.

The episodes in season three provide viewers with some interesting cases as the police investigate a variety of crimes while at the same time dealing with personal issues.

The season begins with a body found in the river which happens to be the county border. Who has jurisdiction? When their counterparts claim the case is theirs, Humphrey and DS Esther continue their own investigation. After all, Humphrey is a genius at seeing things that others miss.

The season also deals with feuding farm families, a kidnapped nurse, rival sailors whose daughters are now top contenders in the local Regatta, a potential chocolate poisoning, and a stalker whose target is Kelby’s old friend.

Throughout the season, Esther’s budding romance with Archie (Jamie Bamber), who happens to be Martha’s old boyfriend, comes into play. Esther wants to keep their relationship a secret, while Archie wants to let everyone know about their romance. He is a nice guy whose feelings for her keep getting stronger, however Esther has a hard time letting herself be happy. Can this relationship sustain her confusion and hesitancy?

In this season Esther’s daughter Zoe (Melinda Sinadinou) decides what she wants to do with her life, to the chagrin of her mother. Esther thinks she is making a mistake, but Zoe is old enough to make her own decisions, and if they are mistakes, they are hers to make, as she points out.

PC Kelby has a larger part this season as his diligence and commitment to the job is forthright in his mind. He is a cute character who is dedicate to being the best police officer he can be.

As usual, Humphrey provides plenty of comedy throughout the season. Whether having a cute mishap while skydiving or playing pirate with Rosie, this man exudes fun and excitement. He, however, is also a very clever detective and although he has a genuine fun – and funny – side, his quirkiness adds to the enjoyment of the show. And even though he is quirky, that is exactly what makes him a great detective.

The ending of each case is interesting to watch as Humphrey takes Esther through all the steps to reach his final conclusion about the cases and bring them to a close. Visually, viewers see them going through each step as the conclusion becomes clear.

So, while the gang at the police station are solving crimes, every one of them has personal dilemmas they must face. Whether facing a medical issue, a new family situation, old friends, or new relationships, they all blend beautifully into this series.

“Beyond Paradise” is filled with interesting and unconventional characters who work together wonderfully and always look out for each other. The interesting way Humphrey Goodman puts together clues along with his rather offbeat personality is fun to watch. But when it comes to his family and the victims, he is a dedicated and serious man.

“Beyond Paradise” drops on BritBox October 14 and a fourth season is in production. The series is also available to rent or purchase through Apple TV Plus and is even on the Kanopy streaming site which is available free through many libraries.

Starting at $4.32/week.
