Code of Silence

In this new original drama, Rose Ayling-Ellis stars as Alison Brooks, a deaf woman who is recruited by the local police to read lips in order to stop a major crime from happening. This aspect of the series is interesting and while Alison is helping the police, she goes above and beyond to prove she can do the job, even though it puts her life at risk.

The police are intent on stopping a band of robbers planning a big heist. These guys are ruthless and the police warn Alison to simply do her job and not to get involved or deeper in the situation than necessary. DS Ashleigh Francis (Charlotte Ritchie) is concerned about Alison, however DI James Marsh (Andrew Buchan) wants to pull out all the stops in order to prevent this upcoming crime, even if it means using Alison’s dedication to the highest extent and possibly putting her in more danger.

Alison lives with her mother (Fifi Garfield) who is also deaf and struggling to make ends meet. Alison does whatever she can to help her mom, and with the help of her old boyfriend, who, by the way, is still in love with her, they work on the financials of the family to keep them from being evicted.

With her personal life in a bit of a mess, Alison throws herself into the police investigation, going so far as to get a job in the pub where the dangerous criminals meet. It is there she comes face to face with one of them. Liam Barlow (Kieron Moore) is taken by Alison’s charm and sense of humor. The two form a friendship that is helpful to Alison’s part in the investigation. This puts her in more danger, but Alison is determined to do whatever it takes to help the police. This is the first time in her life she feels important and can contribute something helpful to society.

But when Alison and Liam start getting closer, her conscience comes into play. Should she pursue this relationship or simply stay friends with Liam, who makes his feelings clear? This is a dilemma she has to face, and face it she does.

Alison is an interesting character, dedicated to this new part of her life. She even follows the criminals in order to record their conversations, putting herself in even more danger. But her cunning and ingenuity keep her from getting caught.

The visuals in the series provide a different view of how lip readers translate what they see. Viewers watch jumbled words and letters take shape to give Alison a clear understanding of what is being said.

There are six episodes in this first season. The second season has been confirmed so viewers who enjoy watching this unique situation have something to look forward to with another story.

As reported in “RadioTimes.com”, Ayling-Ellis said, “I’m so proud that ‘Code of Silence’ has been recommissioned.

“The response to the first series has been incredible, and it means so much to be part of a drama that not only keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, but also puts a Deaf character at the heart of the story.

“Im really excited to see where Alisons journey goes next and to be working again with the wonderful cast, crew and creative team behind the show.”

This is an interesting and intriguing story with a bang-up finale to the season, wrapping up the season with a nice little bow. There is a glimpse at the storyline for the second season.
