Hidden Assets

The Irish/Belgium drama “Hidden Assets” captured the attention of viewers when it debuted three years ago. The Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) in Ireland joined forces with the Belgian Police to uncover a diamond plot with ties to recent terrorist bombings. From there, the series progressed through a maze of clues and characters as the two teams tried to stop another bombing.

The second season continued the joint collaboration with CAB Detective Sergeant Claire Wallace (Nora-Jane Noone) taking over for her predecessor Detective Emer Berry (Angeline Ball) as she and her fellow Irish officers worked with Belgian Police Commissioner Christian de Jong (Wouter Hendrickx) in a continuation of the investigation into money laundering taking place at the Belgian port of Antwerp. Fans of the show were in for a surprise at the end of this season.

Now, the third season brings plenty more drama to the CAB team as they follow the trail of embezzled Irish funds to a new location. CAB is tasked with retrieving assets that rightfully belong to Ireland and/or have been taken during crimes, and their clues lead them around Europe, this time to Spain.

This season Claire and her team of Sean Prendergast (Aaron Monaghan) and Norah Dillon (Cathy Belton) continue to work tirelessly to do their jobs. Incidentally, the only characters that appear in all three season are Norah and Sean.

Spain adds a new dimension this season. The location is the Basque region of Northern Spain. DS Wallace’s Spanish co-workers are detective Sebastian Ruiz (Miguel Meló) and Lore Velasquez (Charlotte Timmers).

This new investigation begins with the murder of a journalist and her family in Spain. Clues lead back to an old CAB raid, which is the impetus for Wallace and the team to join forces with the Basque police.

Connecting a recent suicide to the funds now associated with a property and people in Spain, the team sets off on a new case that is just as intense and often gritty as the others. Seasons one and two were joint Irish/Belgium productions. Season three adds Spain to the production. While the dreary scenery around Belgium added to the intense drama, the Basque region of Spain is a bit more picturesque, although the drama is just as deep and powerful.

For viewers who enjoy intricate drama, this is a good choice. The characters are compelling and their jobs are intense. This season begins with a disturbing situation for Claire and from there the story gets even darker. How the team adds up clues that lead them to people and places is intriguing, and their dedication is unsurpassed.

This is a suspenseful international drama with intense storylines as well as characters. The show has been nominated for several Irish Film and Television Awards.

“Hidden Assets” can be streamed on Acorn TV, part of the AMC networks. It is available online, as an app for smart tv, and as an add on to a Prime Video subscription. The series is a fan favorite and season four has already been announced.
