My LIfe is Murder_Season 5, Episode 7

Lucy Lawless is back for a fifth season of “My Life is Murder.” Lawless is Alexa Crowe, a retired Australian police officer who is now helping the police solve murders and is a baker on the side. Or, she is a baker who helps the police solve murders on the side. Whichever it is, she and her friend/colleague Madison (Ebony Vagulans) take on cases that have interesting characteristics.

The series originated in Australia but relocated to Lawless’ native New Zealand, where Lawless resides. Bringing the production to her hometown of Auckland was important to the star of “Xena, Warrior Princess.”

In season five, Alexa and Madison continue their witty banter as they tackle cases that the police cannot handle. Detective Inspector Henare (Rawiri Jobe) enlists Alexa to investigate several murders and, as she always does, Alexa solves the crimes. While making her bread — sourdough is her specialty — Crowe manages to cleverly outsmart suspects and solve puzzles that lead directly to the murderers.

Another regular on the show is Reuben Wulf (Joseph Naufahu), the owner of the local coffee house which sells not only coffee, but also Alexa’s homemade bread. Reuben always adds some encouragement to both Alexa and Madison.

With Madison using her tech intelligence, Alexa using her instincts and powers of deduction, the team forges on to another hit season. With humor and zeal, the duo maneuver their way through the streets of Auckland and manage to find time to solve murders as well as infuse the stories with some underlying personal aspects, not least of which is the return of Alexa’s brother Will (Martin Henderson). Will brings a little bizarre but playful element to their lives. He is a grifting con-artist who just might be at the end of that “career.” Alexa’s beloved and adorable cat Chowder also returns for some fun and games in several episodes.

Although fans of Alexa Crowe would like to see her in a romantic relationship, they will get little teases throughout the season, however not one man will capture her heart.

The final two episodes of the season reunite Alexa with her former Australian homicide partner Jesse (Craig Parker). Alexa is vacationing in Fiji but R and R is not on the agenda, as she finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation that ends up being a lot more than a simple murder. After all, as the title states, her life is murder.

With the beautiful and picturesque scenery of Aukland (and this season a little look at Fiji), the wit and intelligence of Alexa Crowe, the tech genius of Madison, and a slew of guest stars, the season is filled with plenty of murder mysteries that, true to form, are solved by Crowe who puts herself right in the middle of the action.

Whether she is investigating the death of a fitness influencer, which she immediately surmises is not an accident, the death at an aquarium, a pet owner who winds up dead, or rivalries in various forms, Alexa always gets the man or woman.

Having premiered in 2019, Alexa Crowe has been an endearing investigator to fans of the actress. With Crowe’s laid-back style, this series is a nice respite from some of the intense murder shows. Alexa and friends provide viewers with an easy-going 45 minutes of investigations mixed with some frivolity.

Season five of “My Life is Murder” is now rolling out (Jan. 5 – Feb. 23) with new episodes weekly on Acorn TV. Each episode is a story in itself so it is not necessary to view them in order, with the exception of the final two episodes in the season.

Starting at $4.32/week.
