A Taste for Murder

“A Taste for Murder” takes viewers to the island of Capri, which is adjacent to Naples, Italy on the Amalfi Coast. It is an interesting locale for this crime drama, which just finished its freshman season with a renowned cast.

Detective Chief Inspector Joe Mottram (Warren Brown), is grieving over the death of his wife. His teenage daughter Angelica (Beau Gadsdon) is also having a difficult time getting on with her life.

To get away from the memories and hopefully begin to heal, Joe and Angelica travel to Capri to be with her grandparents Elena and Gennaro (Phyllis Logan and Urbano Barberini) who own a restaurant on the coast. The summer there would be a chance for Joe and Angelica to reconnect, for Angelica to get closer to her grandparents, and for all of them to refresh and renew.

With good intentions on Joe’s part, he immediately gets involved in a local police case led by Inspector Lara Sarrancino (Cristiana Dell’Anna), who, at first, resents this outsider’s assistance and insights, but later realizes he is great at his job and welcomes his help.

What turns from just one case into many is helpful for Joe to focus on things other than his grief, but also damaging to his relationship with Angelica. After all, they were supposed to spend the summer together. Joe ends up temporarily joining the local police for a few cases but by the end of the season it looks like his temporary situation might turn into something more.

While Joe is busying himself with local police cases, Angelica is busying herself with a local boy. She is a rebellious young teen who is attracted to danger and to a dangerous young man.

Another storyline weaving itself through the six episodes of the season is the secret Gennaro is keeping from Joe. It seems he has had some shady dealings with a local crime boss and is now being plagued by that mistake. This crime boss is high on the list of priorities for the police who have yet to be able to pin him to his activities.

While all of these stories play out, the food in the restaurant makes its way into the show. Joe attempts to learn how to make the Italian delicacies, which was something his wife was teaching him. She grew up in this environment, and being able to get closer to her parents and the restaurant is something he dearly wants.

The various storylines fit together in a way that leads to the climatic ending of the season. With a big cliff-hanger, fans are anxiously waiting to get the word that the show has been renewed, however it looks like it will be.
