Marshals

In the new drama “Marshals,” Kayce Dutton is back taking his life in a new direction. This spinoff of the hit series “Yellowstone” (2018-2024) takes Kayce (Luke Grimes) into a new direction along with his son Tate (Brecken Merrill).

Kayce joins the U.S. Marshals to bring justice to the land and people he loves in Montana. A former Navy SEAL, this cowboy has many talents that help his team fight crime, however he has to wrestle with his new status as a law enforcer. And his role as father changes when he discovers that ranching might not be in Tate’s future. While the Duttons have held this part of Montana for generations, their stake in the land might be at its end.

Gil Birmingham reprises his role as Thomas Rainwater, Mo Brings Plenty also returns as Mo.

The series starts off with a bang as Kayce and his team are thrust into an anti-government militia plot, with members armed to the teeth.

When speaking with select media, Grimes described his initial reaction to being back as Kayce Dutton. “It was kind of surreal. We shot on the same sound stages that we started ‘Yellowstone’ on in 2017. So it was like kind of a strange like fever dream being back on the same stages. Obviously we ended up in Montana all those years later, but to be on the same stages in the same costume eight years later, but then having so many new faces and a whole new crew was very surreal but it’s something I’m really grateful for. I really love this job, I love this character, and I love the new cast and the new crew.”

So, for fans of “Yellowstone,” this story picks up not long after the original series ended. “Where we meet him [now],” Grimes explained about his character, “he’s kind of just at the end of his emotional road. Obviously in the original series, so many really hard things have happened to this guy with his family, with his past, suffering PTSD from things that happened to him at war. And then, right when you meet him here, you pretty much find out that his wife has passed away.”

Grimes added, “But the really great device of our show is that Kayce finds a purpose and a reason to get up in the morning,” which is due to his old SEAL buddy who brings him into the Marshals.

When asked about what he thought when he realized there was more for him to do in the “Yellowstone” saga, Grimes admitted he was a bit surprised. “I’ll just say that I thought ‘Yellowstone’ was over. I didn’t see any chance of it continuing, especially because Kayce’s arc ended so sort of perfectly, and I thought anything past that is just going to be sort of boring to watch. He’s happy, so that’s no fun. There’s no drama there.”

Then, after a discussion with Spencer Hudnut, the Executive Producer and Showrunner, Grimes admitted it was going to be a good project. “And up until that point, I didn’t think that this was going to happen. It was sort of meeting him and hearing the idea and thinking, you know, there really is something there to explore. And Kayce can do some things in this show that people kind of wished he could’ve done in ‘Yellowstone’, so that was exciting for me.”

And young Brecken Merrill, admitted he was very happy to be back. “I feel like ‘Yellowstone’ ended too quickly. So when I got the email that they were working on a spin-off, I was really excited, and now we’re here and I’m really excited to see the product.” The other returning cast members nodded in agreement.

“Marshals” premiered March 1, 2026 on CBS and is available to stream on Paramount+ live and on-demand for Paramount+ Premium plan subscribers, and Paramount+ Essential subscribers can stream episodes on-demand the day after they premiere.
