“War” premiered October 1 on HBO Max.

The new HBO drama “War” stars Dominic West and Sienna Miller as a high-powered couple going through a difficult divorce. But that is only one element to this story. The other is the battle between the two law firms that represent the couple.

Morgan Henderson (West), a British billionaire tech mogul, and Carla Duval (Miller), a famous movie star, have their claws out as they do battle in the divorce proceedings. But the law firms of Cathcarts, an older established firm representing Henderson, and Taylor and Byrne, a more modern firm representing Duval, are devious in their endeavors.

The pilot episode is rather tame until the last ten minutes when the whole plot changes and through twists and turns will captivate the attention of viewers. From there the story takes off. It’s a bumpy ride.

Which one of the battling firms will come out on top? And which one of the divorcing couple will be victorious? She wants her firm to take him for everything. But he is not going to give up without a fight. And neither are his attorneys. And what a fight it is.

Archie Renaux plays young attorney John “Johnny” Warren. He is ambitious after having been away from London and the law for a while. Deep down, he is rather ruthless, which makes him perfect for what is asked of him. No Spoilers Here!

“I sort of saw Johnny as this really earnest character, just with a real sort of desperation to succeed and that sort of outweighed his morals a little bit and because he is constantly doing stuff and he hasn’t really got time to think about repercussions, he’s just in the moment, it’s all action but you know, I think eventually, because he has got a good heart, viewers will undoubtedly wonder if there are any morals or morally-guided attorneys in either of the firms,” Renaux told a group of media professionals.

Creator George Kay explained, “I had this idea to do a show between two law firms warring with each other every season.”

Although the divorce is what drives this season, law firms are what at the heart of the series. And, when this season is over, the show will continue with the same law firms dueling it out in another case. The second season will involve a defamation case and will bring in Marisa Tomei, Kelly Macdonald, David Harewood, and Richard Schiff. There is no date yet when season two will premiere.

This season leads up to the courtroom, after all the backroom battles and strategies. “I think we did on set fall quite comfortably into our camps and really shot most of this series with our respective law firms, Dom and I particularly,” Miller told the media. “So, when we got to court we were on opposite sides and it was heaven because we loved each other and we could all hang out and be children in the green room, but it definitely felt like us versus them I think.”

Kay was very invested in portraying the divorce case to the hilt. “We discovered as we sat down in the writer’s room, it’s quite a complicated thing, and you have these exit points in a divorce where you can mediate and then you can agree it’s fine, we’ll settle, and then that can be the end of it, and then you can go to arbitration and litigation, and we had to learn a lot of stuff. But it’s just the emotional toll that we were doing and trying to see how much we could make everyone suffer, really.”

West was more philosophical when he added, “I suppose the whole process of the case is that they’re walking on this knife edge between love and war, and the lawyers are trying to push them into war, and he’s desperately trying to remember why he loves his wife.”

This is a true drama in every sense of the word. It is an interesting peek inside the sometimes aggressive and competitive business of law firms.
