The Utah Metropolitan Ballet has brought its performance of “The Nutcracker” to the Covey Center. This timeless holiday classic brings the magic of Tchaikovsky’s beloved composition to life in a truly enchanting manner that is sure to enrich the community’s holiday spirit.

Upon entering the Covey Center, tables are filled with nutcrackers for patrons to buy as a keepsake decoration for the holiday. Decorated nicely for Christmas, there’s something magical about going to a performance. Inside the theater, the audience is met with a view of the breathtaking sets that were filled with incredible detail. It felt as though one was going back in time into a fantasy world, with snow-covered landscapes and beautiful ballrooms. The attention to detail was incredible, the costumes were fairy-tale-like and the picturesque production created a very immersive and magical experience.

The choreography was nothing short of spectacular. The dancers’ precision and grace were evident in every movement, from the delicate arabesques to the lively and energetic ensemble pieces. The talented-filled performance between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince was a highlight, showcasing both technical skill and emotional depth. Each dancer seemed to embody the characters with a genuine passion that resonated throughout the performance.

The orchestra, led by Bryce Rytting, provided a magnificent accompaniment to the dancers, capturing the nuances of Tchaikovsky’s score with precision and emotion. The live music enhanced the overall atmosphere, adding a layer of richness to the production.

One cannot discuss “The Nutcracker” without acknowledging the young talent featured in the cast. The children who portrayed the roles of Clara, Fritz and their fellow playmates were remarkable. The children did a great job of connecting with the fellow children in the audience, who had their eyes locked on the stage and would wave to the dancers throughout the performance.

The second act of the ballet, set in the Land of Sweets, was a dazzling display of color and choreographic brilliance. The Sugar Plum Fairy’s solo was executed flawlessly, leaving the audience in awe of the dancer’s skill and the sheer beauty of the performance.
