Summer theater is in full swing up at Sundance Mountain Resort. With a stage tucked away on the mountainside, it is the perfect backdrop for a summer evening filled with theater. This marks the 16th year of Sundance’s collaboration with the Utah Valley University School of Arts, with both organizations working hard to showcase the talent held at UVU as well as the serene backdrop of the resort.

The story is based on the newsboys strike of 1899 in New York City. “Newsies” tells the inspiring story of the newsboys and newsgirls in the strike who stand up to the dominant publishers in hopes of receiving fair treatment for their work. The story follows Jack Kelly, who is played by Jordan Briggs, as he leads the fight with the other newsies. Briggs did a wonderful job in his role, perfectly showcasing the charisma that Jack had while equally demonstrating the struggle that Jack faced as a young boy trying to do what was best for his friends.

Another standout performance is that of Katherine Plumber, played by Makenna Ashby. I was blown away by her vocal performance throughout the show. Her character, a strong-minded female journalist, was portrayed with authenticity that was felt from the crowd. In her solo performance of “Watch What Happens,” the audience was in silent awe after listening to her before breaking into a loud round of applause after the song was over.

The choreography, created by Erin Farrell Speer, was a standout feature of this production. Every leap, dance and synchronized step was executed with precision and passion, showcasing the incredible talent of the dancers and bringing the vibrant world of “Newsies” to life in a way that is visually entertaining. A few times within the show, the cast came into the crowd through the stairways, helping to spread the onstage energy directly into the crowd. Overall, the ensemble was one of their best as their voices all blended together seamlessly as they sang and danced their way through the evening.

Under the direction of Jennifer Delac Rimke, “Newsies” at Sundance Mountain Resort is a showcase of storytelling music, and dance that is not to be missed. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the original film or discovering the world of “Newsies” for the first time, this production promises an unforgettable evening of entertainment that will leave you wanting the night to go on forever.

Running now through Aug. 10, shows are held Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday with an additional show added on Aug. 6 due to popular demand. Tickets are available for purchase on Sundance’s website, so don’t miss this opportunity to see the award-winning musical surrounded by the natural beauty at Sundance Mountain Resort.
