Springville City confirmed the victim of Monday’s fatal vehicle crash was the founder and president of the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple and leader of Utah Krishnas, Christopher Caru Warden.

Warden, 79, also known as Caru Das, was a pillar of the Krishna faith and Utah community.

The Krishna Temple near Spanish Fork released the following statement Tuesday:

“With profound grief and heavy hearts, we share an extremely devastating news that our beloved spiritual guide and mentor, HG Caru Prabhuji (Caru Utah) has left his body. Prabhuji dedicated his entire life in loving service to Sri Sri Radha Krishna and Srila Prabhupada. Through his humility, compassion, and deep devotion, he touched and transformed the lives of so many. His words, example and association will continue to inspire us on the path of Krishna consciousness.

The Krishna Temple said it will share last rite details once they are finalized.

“At this time, we humbly request all devotees to kindly offer our heartfelt prayers for his continued service at the lotus feet of the Lord and for the community to gather strength,” the statement added.

A Spanish Fork spokesman told the Daily Herald in a statement the city is “deeply saddened to learn of Charu’s passing.”

“As president of the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple, he was a meaningful part of our community and helped create experiences of joy, connection and belonging for so many in Spanish Fork. Our hearts are with his family, friends and all those who knew and loved him,” the spokesman said.

According to Springville police, a vehicle was traveling southbound on Main Street approaching 1400 North Monday afternoon in Springville when it left its lane and collided with oncoming traffic.

Police and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene to provide aid, but the southbound driver could not be revived, police said. All occupants of the other vehicles received non-life-threatening injuries and were not taken to the hospital.
