Landscapers install subsurface drip lines at a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah in October 2023.

The three-hour meeting block isn’t returning in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but there is somewhat of a return to the way things used to be when that was the case.

In an announcement released Monday, the church said that members will meet for both Sunday School and quorum or class meetings each week beginning Sept. 6.

According to the new format, sacrament meeting will be 60 minutes, while Sunday School and quorum or class meetings will be 25 minutes each.

Currently, sacrament meeting is held each week while Sunday School and quorum or class meetings alternate.

Sacrament meeting is where members partake of bread and water in remembrance of the body and blood of Jesus Christ and covenant to always remember him. The meeting usually includes announcements and talks.

Quorum and class meetings include Elders Quorum, Relief Society, Young Women and Aaronic Priesthood quorum meetings. They are gender specific and are structured similarly to Sunday School.

Primary classes, for children up until the year that they turn 12, will continue each Sunday and be 55 minutes in length at the same time as Sunday School and quorum or class meetings.

“The adjustments will strengthen gospel learning in homes and congregations throughout the world,” the church said in a press release.

The press release added that the adjustments are being made “to support members in their efforts to be lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ.”

The church referenced the change to the two-hour schedule in January 2019 and hinted at more changes to be announced.

“Members across the world have embraced these changes with faith and enthusiasm,” the release stated. “Additional adjustments will be introduced to further enhance learning, fellowship, and worship.”
