Historic Lehi Roller Mills offers tours
Pleasant Grove Correspondent
LEHI — The Lehi Roller Mills has been a prominent part of the local landscape since 1906, when it first began to mill flour.
“Roller” refers to the large steel rollers that grind the wheat into flour. These steel rollers were a great technological advance over grinding stones, which had been used to grind grain since ancient times.
The operation currently grinds about 100,000 pounds of flour and grain products a day.
“We grind 30 different kinds of flour,” said Cory Jensen, marketing director. Many residents are probably familiar with some of the mill’s products — Germade, Turkey Brand flour and Turkey Red Wheat.
And the building itself is listed on the National Historic Register.
It’s an impressive sight when seen from the freeway and is even more interesting when viewed up close. The silos and storage facilities are enormous, and it isn’t hard at all to imagine ton after ton of wheat being milled and processed into flour.
The mills have recently begun giving a limited number of tours. Available to visitors age 12 and up with a minimum group size of 10, the 60-minute tour will show guests the entire milling process.
Karen Holt, corporate marketing director, says, “We welcome vacationers and families. We are a working mill, thus the 12-year-old age limit.”
The mill also features a retail store. The newly remodeled shop is filled with Lehi Roller Mills products, including a variety of specialty mixes, gift packs and their famous Turkey Brand flour. Freshly baked bread is available daily.
And you can even sample products such as the Mills’ double fudge brownies and raspberry muffins.
The store also sells several nonfood items, including a Lehi Roller Mills folk art puzzle and art prints of the mill.
The mill’s Web site, www.lehimill.com, contains more than a dozen photographs and descriptions of the milling process. The steps of cleaning, separating and grinding the wheat are described.
Lehi Roller Mills is open to visitors from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday. To schedule a tour, contact Holt at 768-4401. For general information, visit the Web site or phone 768-4401.
