Krispy Kreme introduces a drinkable doughnut

By Ken Hoffman - Daily Herald - | Aug 10, 2004

This week I reached out for a Frozen Original Kreme — a tall, frosty doughnut that you drink — at Krispy Kreme. Gulp.

But it’s not just any doughnut. I’m talking about a legendary glazed doughnut from Krispy Kreme — the sugariest, sweetest, stickiest, gooiest, most addictive devil ever to escape a deep-fryer.

A Frozen Original Kreme is for doughnut freaks who find chewing to be a waste of time and effort. I would like to meet the demented scientists at Krispy Kreme who invented drinkable doughnuts. I want to thank them for using their genius for good instead of evil.

Here’s the blueprint: It’s a chilly, icy smoothie that tastes like a glazed doughnut.

Total calories for a 20-ounce Frozen Original Kreme: 730. Fat grams: 24. Dietary fiber: 0 grams. Carbs: 117 grams. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $3.99.

Carbs … how manyfi Yikes! That’s a whole week’s worth of carbs for my little Atkins Addicts.

Wait, it gets scarier. Krispy Kreme has three other flavors of frozen drinks: Raspberry, Latte and Double Chocolate. They come in three sizes: 12, 16 and 20 ounces. The 20-ounce Double Chocolate has — get a load (a wiiide load) of this — 160 carbs. Danger, Will Robinson, danger!

Last week, I got a personal backstage tour of a Krispy Kreme and watched how they make a Frozen Original Kreme liquid doughnut. They’re made to order, one at a time, so that’s a good start. First you pour some water; then ice; then three, four or five scoops of flavored powder (depending on the size of the drink) into an industrial-strength Blendtec blender. A few seconds later — voilà! — you have a doughnut smoothie. It’s weird, but it tastes exactly like a Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut. And that, my friend, is a good thing.

That also was the holdup in bringing Frozen Original Kremes to market. Krispy Kreme waited until it could translate the exact flavor profile of its glazed doughnut into a smoothie. By George, they’ve got it. You’ll laugh the first time you drink one.

As you can tell from the staggering nutritional lineup, this isn’t exactly Atkins-approved, Jenny Craig-approved or anybody-approved. OK, maybe Ruben Studdard approves. But it’s not for the faint of heart or the slim of waist. Krispy Kreme uses 6X sugar in these drinks. That means the sugar has been refined six times. It goes down real easy.

Krispy Kreme has no plans to create a low-fat, low-calorie or low-carb version of these drinks. That means Atkins dieters on a bender have a choice to make. A large Frozen Double Chocolate has 160 carbs. A Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut has only 22 carbs. What to dofi

If you only care about carbs, do you go for the guzzle or revel in SEVEN doughnutsfi Or do you dunk the doughnuts in the Frozen Double Chocolate and call the Big and Tall Clothes Store and ask if it does alterationsfi

Just a warning: Seven doughnuts pack 1,500 calories, but who’s countingfi
