Look out! Here comes the fudge!

By Daily Herald - | Dec 27, 2005

This week I reached out for a cup of Here Comes the Fudge ice cream, one of the golden-oldie flavors making a comeback at Baskin-Robbins.

Just remember, the flavors may be from the revolutionary ’60s, but the prices are thoroughly modern, Millie — about $2 for a single dip.

Here’s the blueprint for Here Comes the Fudge: caramel-fudge ice cream with chunks of chewy fudge brownies and a swirl of chocolate fudge. Stop me when I mention something that doesn’t sound fantastic.

Total calories (per scoop): 270. Fat grams: 15. Dietary fiber: 1 gram. Carbs: 32 grams. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $1.99 (your mileage may vary).

Republicans and Democrats alike thought Baskin-Robbins made a supremely judicious decision to introduce this flavor in 1968. “Here comes the judge” was a wildly popular catchphrase on the top-rated national addiction called “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.” Flip Wilson based entire routines on a hipster judge using the same phrase. And Shorty Long had a Top-40 novelty hit …

“Here comes the judge,

Here comes the judge

Stop eatin’ that fudge,

‘Cause here comes the judge”

They sure don’t write songs like that anymore … thank goodness.

TV trivia experts will remember a short-lived sitcom in 1972 called “Here Comes the Judge.” It starred Darren McGavin as a widowed judge trying to raise children with the help of Barbara Feldon (Agent 99 from “Get Smart”). Feldon wasn’t so smart this time.

Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins began making ice cream in 1946. The original idea was to offer 31 flavors — one for each day of the month. In the ’60s, they expanded to concocting imaginative flavors with names based on current events, sports attractions, fads, movies, songs, TV shows or anything that might sound good sitting on a cone.

Here Comes the Fudge was one of the first, and it’s still one of the best. I think it’s the caramel-fudge ice cream that puts it over the top. Come on, there’s only so much you can do with vanilla and chocolate ice cream. How many times can you throw in some almonds and think up a silly namefi

But caramel-fudge ice creamfi Now you’re talkin’. Caramel and chocolate make a wonderful double-play combination. It’s the time-tested basis for hundreds of candy bars and sundaes.

Everybody loves brownies. And you’re going to turn down a swirl of chocolate fudgefi It all adds up to a rich, creamy treat that deserves this second chance. If The Rolling Stones can still sell out concerts, then Here Comes the Fudge ice cream can still move cones and cups.

Baskin-Robbins will roll out classic oldie flavors, two at a time, in a series called Flavor Fanatics. Here Comes the Fudge and Boston Cream Pie will stick around through Feb. ’06. Boston Cream Pie has a pretty mean blueprint, too: custard ice cream, chocolate-cookie crumbles, golden flakes and chocolate swirls.

But it’s Here Comes the Fudge that’s on trial here, and my verdict is: guilty! The flavor gets two months in the cooler for being a guilty pleasure.
