Lehi has contenders at state meet

By Jared Lloyd - North County - | Feb 7, 2007

Things appear to be shaping up well for the Springville wrestling team heading into the 4A state wrestling tournament at the McKay Events Center this week.

The Red Devils dominated the Region 7 meet and will send 18 athletes to the biggest event of the season, while the most notable competition — Mountain Crest and Box Elder — are not supposed to be as good this year.

Not so fast, says Springville head coach Justin Judkins. Getting the top spot as a team requires one of two scenarios, according to Judkins.

“You have to either have a lot of depth and good junior varsity wrestlers or you have to have five or six guys that can win their divisions,” he said. “I think we’ve got people who can wrestle for the state titles.”

While Lehi and Payson probably won’t be in the hunt for the top spot, those two are expected to battle for a top-5 finish. Leading the way for the Pioneers will be Matt Spencer (119 pounds), while Taggart Miller (145 pounds) is the top Lion wrestler.

“They have a lot of young guys that are going to make an impact,” Judkins said. “They want to show that they are improving and that they can make a run at a title in the future.”

The action began yesterday and continues through tomorrow evening.
