North Sanpete begins pre-season sports
mt. pleasant– Looking outside, it might be tough to tell that it is time for spring sports to begin, but regardless of the weather, the last couple of months of the school year are dedicated to outside activities.
At North Sanpete High School, this means that for many of the sports they will begin their tryouts indoors. Coaches recently got their initial look at potential players, but for baseball, softball, and track those looks were limited to what could take place in the gym and weight room.
Soccer was able to start the week outside as they traveled to Moroni to play on the field at the middle school. While the field may be wet, there was less snow that fell on the west side of the valley and the soccer pitch is clear for playing.
The boy’s soccer team is under the direction of first year coach Andy Coon, who moved to Mt. Pleasant from Colorado. He will be assisted by Brennan Larsen, who played for the high school about four years ago.
The soccer team will find out quickly what kind of team they have this year as they took on Rowland Hall at North Sanpete March 6. The private school usually has one of the top teams in the state among the smaller schools, but the Hawks return a good number of players with varsity experience.
Next weekend, the kickers will travel to the southern end of the state in search of some warmer weather and will meet with the Hurricane Tigers on Friday, March 9, and then the Flyers from Dixie High on Monday, March,12. They will return to play in Sanpete valley Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17, taking on South Summit and Cedar City, respectively.
Coach Lee R. Sorenson will look to improve on last year’s baseball season, but he will be forced to keep his team indoors until the field clears of snow and the dirt dries out.
The Hawk’s have a good core of varsity players that will return this season, but as always, he is looking for good, strong arms to use on the pitcher’s mound.
Sorenson will be helped by Adam Dyches with the older boys and his son, Morgan, as well as Rory and Trevor Johnson, all North Sanpete alumni will help with the younger teams.
It won’t be long until the diamonds will be put in use with the first game of the season scheduled for Saturday, March 10 at 12 p.m., against the Park City Miners.
Following will be a long season on the road due to the Hawks not having another game scheduled at home until April 17 for the second half of the Region 8 season.
After finishing with a 17-5 record last year and making their way deep into the state 3A tournament, the Lady Hawk softball team is looking for nothing less than a state title to put in the trophy case.
Chad Larsen will again take the helm with the assistance of Stephanie Blaine, Wendell Jacobsen and Teneille Bailey.
As usual, Larsen has girls to work with that have played a great deal in past years and while he won’t say at this point who some of his main players might be, one only has to look at last year to see who coould be the top players this year.
Laney Jacobsen was a major force on the mound and will look to continue her domination in her senior year. Other seniors with lots of experience for Coach Larsen will be Chelsea Bird, Chelsee Morley, Aubree Poulson and Skyler Dunn among others.
Softball also opens up at home Wednesday, March 14, against the always good Tooele Buffaloes and then the next day against the Payson Lions. Both games start at 3 p.m. North Sanpete will then go south and take part in the very competitive Dixie Tournament.
The boy’s tennis team lost a large part of their varsity squad as their first single position and all four doubles players graduated last year.
Coach Jeff Ericksen will look to a couple of juniors who started varsity as sophomores last year to help get the season started on the right track. Juniors Scott Bentley and Shawn Miner played second and third singles last year and another junior Josh Benson, will also look to add some depth to the team.
While the doubles positions are wide-open, there are several players poised to fill those spots and are expected to play well.
The team will welcome South Sevier to North Sanpete High to begin things Thursday, March 15. They will go to St. George to take part in the Bloomington Country Club Tournament Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17.
Not to be left out, the track team is looking for more region championships from both the boys and girls. Coach Scott Butler has already seen good results from several of his female runners during a couple of winter indoor meets.
He expects only bigger and better things as the teams get a chance to get out and stretch their legs.
With too many runners to name, suffice it to say that this team will be one of the best in recent memory. They have depth in the sprints and distance positions and will work to increase their abilities in the field events.
The first chance the track team will have to prove themselves will be on Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17, when they travel to Cottonwood High for the competitive Cottonwood Relays.
