Knights take on Mountain View in girls, boys basketball

By Beky Beaton - North County - | Jan 24, 2007

Region week 2 may have lacked the highlight-reel finishes of week 1, but some of the results were no less dramatic.

The biggest shockers came in Region 7 boys, where once top-ranked Timpview suffered a pair of tough losses, in overtime at Lehi and by two at Payson.

Orem managed to beat Provo without Collinsworth, and very nearly got a road win at Lehi after a late charge in the final four minutes of the game. After a 6-1 start, the Red Devils have struggled and are winless in region, though all of their games so far have been decided by seven points or less.

The Lions seem to be the team most living on the edge as their three league contests have been decided by a combined total of eight points.

In Region 4, Lone Peak bounced back after its first loss with an impressive victory over Timpanogos, while the Vikings won comfortably over the Bruins and the Dons stole one at American Fork.

On the girls side, Orem has established itself as the team to beat in Region 7 after a huge win over second-place Provo last week. The Knights are alone on top in Region 4 after soundly defeating Timpanogos on Friday.

The Bruins, winless in the preseason, won their second region game on Tuesday night and are thus tied with hot-starting American Fork in the league standings.

Here’s a look at what’s coming up in the next week.

Thursday, Jan. 25

GIRLS BASKETBALL

REGION 4

Spanish Fork at Timpanogos (7 p.m.): The Dons (0-5, 3-13) start the second round of region play at Timpanogos (4-1, 7-8). One gets the impression that this team could break out at any time.

However, with the T’Wolf twin towers in the paint, it won’t happen here.

Friday, Jan. 26

GIRLS BASKETBALL

REGION 4

Mountain View at Lone Peak (5 p.m.): The Bruins (2-3, 2-13) have already proven to be a team to be reckoned with, but the Knights (4-0, 9-6) are at the top of their game right now and won’t be caught napping.

American Fork at Pleasant Grove (5 p.m.): The Cavemen (2-3, 12-4) are struggling with region foes that have more seasoned post players.

This will be a concern when they play the Vikings (2-2, 7-8), but perhaps not as much as in some other games. These teams actually match up pretty well, so the victor will likely be the one who wins the rebound battle and gets the most points in transition.

REGION 7

Payson at Lehi (5:15 p.m.): The Pioneers (0-4, 4-10) have some good players and perform well in stretches, but they are going to need to play both hard and smart for 32 minutes if they want to beat the Lions (1-3, 8-8).

BOYS BASKETBALL

REGION 4

Mountain View at Lone Peak (7 p.m.): No matter what happened on Wednesday, the Knights (1-1, 12-1) will be anxious to protect their home court, especially because it’s youth basketball night.

Like the T’Wolves last week, the Bruins (0-2, 1-11) may be catching Lone Peak at an unfortunate time for the visitors.

American Fork at Pleasant Grove (7 p.m.): The Cavemen (1-1, 10-3) faltered on their home court last week and now have to play the Vikings (2-0, 12-1) on the road.

Whatever Wednesday’s results are for both teams could have a bearing on the outcome here. Regardless, expect American Fork to scrap to the final whistle to try to keep themselves in the contest.

Spanish Fork at Timpanogos (7 p.m.): Can the Dons (2-0, 8-4) keep winningfi You betcha, as long as they keep playing the way they have been the past couple of weeks.

The Timberwolves (0-2, 6-5) aren’t going to roll over and play dead though, especially in their home gym. If they can keep it close, they will have a chance to pull out a win at the end.

REGION 7

Payson at Lehi (7 p.m.): Who would have figured these two teams would have been playing for first place in the region at this pointfi The Lions (3-0, 10-4) and the Pioneers (3-0, 9-5) have nearly identical records and match up very well man-to-man.

This game has the potential to be a high-scoring contest, and will turn into a horse race if the teams decide not to play defense.

That, incidentally, is likely to be what determines the outcome here.

Tuesday, Jan. 30

GIRLS BASKETBALL

REGION 7

Lehi at Provo (5:15 p.m.): Allowing an early big Bulldog (3-1, 11-3) run sank the Pioneers (0-4, 4-10) in the first game between these teams.

The question is, has Lehi learned enough since then to keep this one closerfi

BOYS BASKETBALL

REGION 7

Lehi at Provo (7 p.m.): The Bulldogs are always hard to play at home and after getting a region win, finally, their confidence could be returning.

The Pioneers have already proven they’re not afraid of anyone, however, and they will not be intimidated by physical play or the dog pound. Defending Collinsworth and sharing the ball are the likely keys to this game for Lehi.

Thursday, Feb. 1

GIRLS BASKETBALL

REGION 4

Lone Peak at American Fork (7 p.m.): The first game between these two teams was close. Either will have to play a complete, full-length contest to be successful in the rematch.

Timpanogos at Mountain View (7 p.m.): The Timberwolves have a bit too much going for them to give up a road game against this Bruin team.

REGION 7

Springville at Lehi (5:15 p.m.): The Pioneers won the first showdown between these two struggling teams, but their confidence is a question mark after playing the league’s best.

BOYS BASKETBALL

REGION 7

Springville at Lehi (7 p.m.): The Pioneers won the first round between these two teams, but it was close and the Red Devils have been in every game so far. If Lehi gets a good home crowd and doesn’t forget to show up, they should be able to prevail again.
