Mt. Pleasant– North Sanpete High soccer team played two games at home this past weekend, but couldn’t take advantage of the knowledge of their own field, losing to South Summit 2-1 on Friday, and then getting shutout by Cedar High on Saturday, 2-0.
Against South Summit, the Hawks were in control of the match from the beginning. Playing without their starting goal keeper Brigham Blackham, who injured his leg in a previous contest, didn’t seem to bother the team.
They simply inserted junior varsity starter and backup to Blackham, Jorge Morales, and went on about their business.
Even though the ball was kept on South Summit’s side of the pitch much of the game, North Sanpete was unable to put the ball across the line and into the twine at the back of the goal. Coach Andy Coon’s offensive strategy gave his players numerous opportunities, they just couldn’t cash in.
Finally, senior forward Alex Ence was able to make something happen for his Hawk team as he scored from his left forward position. The joy was short-lived as Bracken Bateman scored a header for his South Summit squad to knot the score.
Both teams played with the even score and it appeared that there would be an overtime period and perhaps even a shootout.
As time ticked below the three-minute mark, a crossing pass was arced into the area in front of the North Sanpete goal and South Summit’s Spencer Quercay soared above the rest, sending the ball neatly into the goal.
The Hawk’s hearts sank as they saw their opportunity to improve on their 1-2 record, while South Summit cheered for their first victory of the season, going to 1-3 for the year.
There was little time for North Sanpete to recover as the very next afternoon, the Cedar Redmen came into town. The Hawks seemed lethargic and never quite got untracked.
They did a decent job defensively, holding a very good Cedar team to just two goals, but somehow the Sanpete kickers need to find a way to get more scores on the board.
To this point, only Alex Ence and Rafael Contreras have been able to put a tally on the board for Coach Coon.
The North Sanpete squad welcomed Grand High school to the Sanpete Valley March 20 (results not available at press time) and will travel to South Summit for a quick rematch in Coalville Wednesday, March 28.
