Cavemen’s Garay named to developmental team

By Beky Beaton - North County - | May 23, 2007

American Fork junior soccer player Francisco Garay has been named to the Real Salt Lake U17 developmental team.

The son of Raul and Corina Garay, Francisco is an honor roll student and a goal-minded forward on the varsity soccer team, which qualified for the playoffs this year for the first time in more than a decade.

His appointment comes as part of the Real Salt Lake Youth Development Program, which is making strides as it moves towards its first season in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Super-Y League in the Under-17 and Under-16 age groups.

Meanwhile, RSL Arizona has announced the team will conduct a pair of open tryouts in the Phoenix area to determine the squads that will participate alongside RSL Utah in the newly-created Rocky Mountain Division of the USL Super Y-League.

Along with RSL Utah and RSL Arizona, the Super Y-League’s Rocky Mountain Division will include teams fielded by two other MLS squads – the Colorado Rapids and Kansas City Wizards – in addition to a pair of Colorado’s top programs, the Colorado Rush and Boulder FC.

The possibility for other teams to be added remains before the USL officially announces the division schedule in the upcoming weeks.

Nearly 120 players from across Utah and Wyoming came to Salt Lake City over a three-week period for RSL Utah’s tryouts, which were conducted under the watch of Real Salt Lake technical director John Ellinger, RSL Utah U-17 head coach Greg Maas, and RSL Utah U-16 head coach Matt Ellinger, along with assistant coaches Adolfo Ovalle, Eric Landon, Matt Mittelstaedt and Chad Sackett.

Starting at $4.32/week.
