Newell Bryan Weight

1916 ~ 2009

Newell Bryan Weight, age 92, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2009 with his family by his side at his home in Orem. He was born August 1, 1916 in Springville, Utah, a son of Ralph and Minerva Bryan Weight. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Hill on July 20, 1936 in Springville, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1939.

Newell was a member of the Good Sam’s Club and the Golden Kiwanis Club. He loved the out of doors, hunting, fishing and riding horses. He was a master gardener and always had a beautiful yard to show for all his hard work. He graduated from BYU with a Masters Degree in Music Education. He furthered his education by earning his Doctorate in Music from USC. Newell worked at BYU from 1949 to 1962. While there he founded the BYU Acapella Choir. In 1962 he moved to the University of Utah and expanded and refined their Acapella Choir. While at the University of Utah his choirs received two Grammy nominations and he served as the Chairman of the Music Department. He was known throughout the Music community for his achievements in conducting choirs. He retired in 1984 from the University of Utah. His artistic musical ability has touched the lives of many and he will be remembered for his dedication and love of music.

Newell is survived by his five children; Coleen Reynolds, Marjorie (Gary) Allred, Gary (Jayne) Weight, Alan (Jan) Weight, Diane (Scott) Barnes. He is also survived by his 25 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, his daughter Gloria, his three brothers; Ormon, Wilford, Vaun, his sisters; Wilda and Gladys. He is also preceded by his 2 grandsons Darren Taylor, Michael Reynolds and his sons-in-law Edward Tetreault and Bruford Reynolds.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the Hillcrest 3rd Ward Chapel, 1450 South 800 East in Orem. Friends and family may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem, and also Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to the services at the ward chapel. Interment will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery, Springville, Utah. Dr. Ed Thompson is organizing a choir to sing and honor Dr. Weight at his funeral services. Former students who are interested in singing please contact Dr. Thompson at acaplaed@comcast.net. Practice will be held one hour prior to the services at the 3rd ward building.
