Dip into redrock ambience at Sand Hollow State Park

With its rocky red cliffs, red sand beaches and warm water, Sand Hollow Reservoir is one of the most scenic recreation areas in Utah for boaters, fishermen and OHV riders. Since its creation in 2003, Sand Hollow State Park has become one of Utah’s most popular parks.

Sand Hollow Reservoir is located 12.5 miles northeast of St. George and 5.5 miles southwest of Hurricane City. It’s the largest reservoir in Washington County. Visitors should exit Interstate 15 at Exit 16 (Highway 9) and travel east for about four miles. Turn right on Sand Hollow Road, then travel south for about three miles and turn left at the park entrance.

There are two boat ramps providing access to the glassy water. It’s a spectacular setting for water sports.

There is a designated “no watercraft” area for those looking to fish, swim or relax on the sandy beaches. The reservoir is stocked with bass and blue gill.

Some beach areas are prone to swimmer’s itch. It is characterized by itching and red dots and can be treated by rinsing off in clean water and taking Benadryl. Those who contract the itch, which is caused by microscopic parasites, are given a free T-shirt at the visitor’s center.

The shore is rocky on the lake’s west side, which is a popular place for cliff jumping. There are plenty of small rocks close to shore that are fun for younger children. A hundred-yard swim to a rocky island will get you to taller cliffs for more daring jumpers.

OHVs are welcome at the 16,000 acres of open sand and trails at Sand Mountain. A brightly colored “whip flag” must be attached to OHVs when riding in sand dune areas. Mufflers are required on all OHVs.

There are two campgrounds at Sand Hollow. The Westside Campground has 50 full-service units. There are also showers at the campground. OHVs must be trailered from this campground and taken about a mile around the lake to a staging area.

The 30-site Sandpit Campground offers only six sites with electrical and water hookups and many other primitive camp sites.

A $10 day-use permit covers watercraft launches and OHV access. To make camping reservations call 1-800-322-3770 or visit stateparks.utah.gov/parks/sand-hollow.
