Women like to travel in packs — shopping, eating, even trips to the Ladies Room. There’s women’s groups like book clubs, scrapbooking expos, recipe exchanges and hand-crafted boutiques.

So why not ski school?

Sundance Resort offers Ladies Day skiing clinics, and have for the past 10-plus years. These classes are exclusively for women — sorry, guys — designed to take the intimidation out of it as well as encourage a community feeling in the group.

Jerry Thoreson, director of Snow Sports School at the resort, said the classes are set up to be fun and enjoyable.

“It becomes a very social group, and it brings them back each week for the next lesson,” he said.

They’ve seen a large group of women who have taken the series in January and are now back for this month’s classes.

Thoreson said, especially for stay-at-home moms, the Ladies Day clinics are a great getaway.

“It gives them an opportunity to get away from the things they’d normally be doing at home and give them a chance to get out and enjoy the mountain,” Thoreson said.

And the best part?

Discounted kids’ classes are offered during the exact same time, so women can bring their little ones up and not have to worry about them while they are skiing.

The structure of the classes is the same as the traditional school: Skiers are divided by skill level, from Never Skied Before to Beginners and Intermediate to Advanced.

Thoreson said there are a lot of benefits from learning to ski in a class. You could teach yourself, but it will most likely take much longer.

“There is an exchange from participant to participant, as well as instructor to student,” Thoreson said. When you learn in a group, you pick up on things from other people in that group.

Plus, an instructor will always lead you down the correct path.

“You are always being guided and coached,” Thoreson said, and you will learn much faster.

“People become loyal to their instructor and there’s a bond between the ladies as well,” Thoreson said, speaking of the Ladies Day clinics.

“Those relationships and bonds are very honest and strong.”
