It’s the first weekend of March, and with the unseasonably warm winter we’re having, it’s been hard to get into a winter routine: No sledding, no snowman building, but it’s not quite warm enough to be outside playing.

So here’s some ideas to fill up this weekend no matter what Mother Nature decides to throw our way:

1. Check out the Autorama.

It’s Utah’s lead-in to the car show season of summer, with magnificent machinery and craftsmanship on display in all its chrome and waxed glory. And as part of the show, check out Rockwell’s Revival II Pin Up Contest, a pageant of sorts for the pin-up beauties that make the cars look even better. The sponsor, Thanks2Frank, is donating all the registry fees to Hugs for Life, a suicide awareness and prevention charity. And check out Utah County native photographer Mia Allen, owner of Pin Up Jane photography studio. She’s entering as a professional, but there is also an amateur category.

Autorama

When: Friday 3-10 p.m.; Saturday 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

Where: South Towne Expo Center, 9575 S. State St., Sandy

Tickets: $15 general, $5 kids 6-12, under 5 are free. Discounts available at Parts Plus & Harley Davidson of Salt Lake

2. Music and Movement

Springville Library hosts Music and Movement, for 1- to 3-year-olds, and 3- to 5-year-olds. With dancing and music, this isn’t your typical trip to the library.

When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m. for ages 3-5, 11:30 a.m. for ages 1-3

Where: Springville Public Library, 45 S. Main St., Springville

3. Winter picnic

While summertime picnics require ice-cold drinks and big shade trees, winter picnics have a different set of criteria. Dress in layers and take a warm lunch, for example, fried chicken, pizza or thermoses of hot soup and cocoa. Then instead of relaxing in the shade, or playing catch, work up a sweat with a game: soccer, tag, disc golf or flag football to name a few. You’ll be shedding those layers in no time.

4. Take in some culture

Find an art gallery and soak in some art — whether it’s sculpture, paintings, photography, etc. There is, of course, the local universities’ museums, and the well-known Springville Museum of Art, but try a smaller gallery you may never have visited before. Check out the Daily Herald’s Ticket entertainment section for listings of the area’s art galleries and museums online at heraldextra.com/ticket.

5. Start your training

It’s only March, but before you know it, it’s race season. If you have lapsed on your “Get Healthy” resolutions in January, renew your goals and start training for a 5K, 10K or whatever goal works for you. There are plenty of them already scheduled: Just check on your city’s website, or the Daily Herald’s calendar, to find out when a race is near you.
