Melba Edwards Carter

1923 ~ 2013

Melba Edwards Carter (1923-2013) left this mortal life on January 2, 2013 to continue on to meet family and friends who have gone on before her. Melba’s life was full of family, faith, and joy. She was loved and respected by all who knew her. She was born on June 18, 1923 to Philo Taylor Edwards and Addie May Gurr. She was the fourth child of fourteen brothers and sisters. She spent most of her young life helping in the home and on the farm in the Provo/Orem area. She graduated from Lincoln High School and a few years after that, she enlisted and served her country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. She was married to Ned Charles Carter, and together they loved and raised five children: Ned James Carter (Corinne Wilson); Michael Glenn Carter (Jary Kelsch); Marsha (R. Thomas Atkin); Suzanne (Julio E. Rodriguez); and Debi (Michael K. Stika). She currently has twenty-four grandchildren and sixty-five great-grandchildren.

Melba’s life was one of service and love to others; especially to children. She took in many foster children and was always supportive and giving to all of the neighborhood children. She served faithfully in her LDS Church callings, was an active member and teacher in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and worked for a time as the Utah Chapter Chairperson for the March of Dimes. She found joy in doing genealogy, planting beautiful flowers, walking and hiking, and being around her family. One of her biggest joys was to support her younger brother, LaVell Edwards, and the BYU football team. She attended all the games she possibly could, along with her parents, brothers, and sisters. She was also responsible for writing a book of history for her family.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ned C. Carter; an infant daughter; a daughter-in-law, Anita Randall Carter; a grand-daughter, Lori Ann Carter; her parents; and five of her siblings. Melba was briefly married to the late Ross Holdaway of Orem.

Services for Melba E. Carter will be located at the Orem 10th Ward Chapel on 50 South 750 West in Orem, UT. The viewing will be on Friday, January 4, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 PM, and then again on Saturday, January 5, 2013 from 9:30-10:30 AM. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM.
