A portion of Provo’s Center Street will soon be transformed into a snow-filled competitive ski and snowboard venue where local athletes will embark on a “Quest for the Holy Rail.”

Next weekend some 80 qualified skiers and snowboarders will compete on several tons of imported snow while thousands of anticipated spectators will cheer on their favorites.

Quest for the Holy Rail, Provo’s first ski and snowboard rail jam, is being dubbed the largest student-hosted event in the history of Utah Valley, according to news materials.

The event has been made possible purely through the efforts of BYU students, said Michael Didier, president of Freeride Academy. “The planning, engineering, construction, marketing — everything is done by us. It’s a great opportunity to showcase the talent and ability of students to make a big difference in the community.”

Competitors will contend for cash prizes and the chance to catch the eye of interested sponsors.

Center Street and 100 West will be closed down exclusively for the rail jam. Spectators are invited to watch the competition, enjoy live entertainment, snag some swag and stick around for the post-competition concert. This event is free for spectators and all ages and audiences are welcome.

The competition is divided into four categories: men’s and women’s skiing, and men’s and women’s snowboarding. A panel of big-name professional athletes will be judging the competition.

In addition to the competition, local band The National Parks will play a free concert in the middle of Center Street immediately following the announcement of the winners.

“The competition, music and atmosphere are going to be incredible,” Didier said. “We’re excited for the community to come together, see great athletes compete, and just enjoy the party.”

Quest for the Holy Rail will be held March 9 on Center Street in Provo. The event, hosted by Freeride Academy, is sponsored by local and national sponsors such as Nu Skin, GoalZero, Dakine, Shakalaka, Overstoked, Knight Trucking, Zeal Optics and more.

Qualified athletes may register online at www.questfortheholyrail.com. The cost for competing is $20 and athletes can sign up until two hours before the beginning of the competition.
