Howard Jarolde Harris II, Jerry, has left this earth life to make more music in the next realm. Jerry passed away Monday, August 18 in his home at 88. He was born in 1926 in Tucson Arizona and played piano all his life. After being told he was a piano player but not a real musician when he joined the Navy, he determined that he would be more in every area the rest of his life.
He led bands, orchestras, choruses, and ensemble groups throughout his schooling and careers, as well as accompanying and singing with is clear tenor. He courted and married the high soprano soloist after meeting at a Messiah performance, and together, he and Colleen R. Harris made every kind of music with students, choirs, and numerous church and civic groups. At BYU he was an early leader of the electronic music program, composer, mentor, Music Theory dept. chairman, beloved MU101 teacher and also played the carillon for a time.
He served in numerous LDS church positions, and served an LDS mission to Arkansas and missions with this wife to Ventura, Ca and the Family History Training Center. Whether he was playing in primary or a sacrament meeting, you were sure to hear an appropriate lick of another song.
Colleen passed away just 6 months ago but to Jerry it seemed that she had been gone longer than the 60 years they were married. As his health declined, he spoke with her about the final chord for a song they were working on. We know the heavens are jumpin and rejoicing.
Jerry leaves 3 daughters, Colleen Jr. (Mike Lee) Carrie (Dale Morris) and Christie (Chad Leith) with 28 grands(once they loved you, you were theirs) 9+ great grands and innumerable other relatives, friends and acquaintances.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 29, 2014 at the Grandview 5th Ward, 1555 N. 1350 W in Provo. A viewing will be held on Thursday August 28, 2014 from 7 to 9 pm at the church and from 9:30 to 10:30 am prior to services. Interment will be at the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
