Utah Valley Living: 3 events to check out this week (May 9-17)

By Staff | May 9, 2026

The full Utah Valley calendar of events is on L4, but here are three local events you should check out this week:

1. SCERA Chamber Singers present “OH HAPPY DAY!”

SCERA Center for the Arts, Orem, May 12, 7 p.m.

It’s easy to get caught up in all the negative, grim things that are happening in the world, so maybe it’s time to focus on the good. That’s what the SCERA Chamber Singers invite you to do at their concert. The website says: “Come enjoy an evening of music presented by SCERA Chamber Singers, a professional-level 25-member adult audition choir directed by Miriam Burton, for a show entitled “Oh Happy Day,” a concert about joy, optimism, peace, companionship and faith.

For more information, go to scera.org.

2. Taming of the Shrew Backstage Edition

Dominic Valente, Daily Herald

The Angelus Theatre celebrated its 105th birthday by opening its doors and having a special show for local acts Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017 in Spanish Fork. DOMINIC VALENTE, Daily Herald

Angelus Theatre, Spanish Fork, May 11-18, 7:30 p.m.

One of the cleverest plays William Shakespeare published is the Taming of the Shrew — but Angelus Theatre is showcasing it from a slightly different perspective. The theater website says: “Come backstage and experience this innovative take on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew! In this version, the actors are in rehearsal, preparing for a full production. Get drawn into the rehearsal process, complete with the interpersonal drama and hilarious mishaps that frequent many stage productions, but you never see on stage. All the while enjoying a slightly abridged version of the classic, The Taming of the Shrew. Even if you typically find Shakespeare confusing or boring, you’ll enjoy this production, because some of the actors feel the same way!”

3. Camp Floyd Cemetery Tour

Camp Floyd State Park, Cedar Valley, May 16, 2 p.m.

Memorial Day is just around the corner, which makes this a great time to recall some of the individuals who served their country but died at Camp Floyd. The state park website says: “Camp Floyd State Park invites you to the Camp Floyd Cemetery at 2 p.m. Learn about the soldiers that died while serving at Camp Floyd. This program is limited to 40 people. Admission fees are $10 per person and reservations are required.”

Sammy Jo Hester, Daily Herald

Dressed in period attire, Mark Trotter explains the history of Camp Floyd to the campers during Johnston's Army Camp.

For more information, go to stateparks.utah.gov/parks/camp-floyd.

Starting at $4.32/week.
