Shooter described as Jekyll and Hyde

GRANTSVILLE — Thomas Schutz sometimes would stop by a neighbor’s house with cookies. There’s a sign on his garage congratulating the state-champion girl’s tennis team.
The same Thomas Schutz walked out of his Main Street home Sunday night, stepped next door to Jimbo’s restaurant and shot his wife, the restaurant’s owners and himself.
“Most of the people who knew him described him as a real Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type,” said Grantsville Police Chief Dan Johnson.
Schutz’s wife, Marilyn, 42, died in the rampage, as did Jimmie Madox, 72, who had owned the restaurant for more than 20 years. Joyce Fawson, 50, longtime cashier and part owner of Jimbo’s, was in stable condition. A bullet from Schutz’s .38 revolver hit her in the abdomen. Schutz, 57, died from a self-inflicted gunshot to his head.
The angry voices coming from 341 E. Main St. Sunday evening were nothing unusual, according to a neighbor who lives next door.
“He was always screaming,” said the woman, who wouldn’t give her name.
Two of the Schutz’s three daughters were at home during the argument. Police were interviewing the high school-age girls to find out what the fight was about.
Marilyn Schutz had apparently gone to the restaurant seeking refuge. Schutz followed with the gun.
On Monday, the house and the restaurant were surrounded by yellow police tape.
Officers had been dispatched to the home on domestic disturbances in the past, but Schutz had never been arrested in Grantsville, Johnson said.
