Other events include a tennis tournament that began Monday, an evening of storytelling and a golf tournament on Wednesday.

Today’s events include a Children’s Pet Show to be held east of city hall from 10 a.m. to noon and a free movie under the tent, “Support your Local Sheriff,” at 9 p.m. in the Alpine City Park.

On Friday, water games will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at the Alpine LDS Stake Center for children 12 and younger with adult supervision required for those under 5. Tickets are 75 cents per child.

At 6 p.m. the Alpine Days rodeo will be held at the rodeo grounds in Lambert Park located in northeast Alpine.

The Youth Dance, for those 14 and older, will also be under the tent in the city park from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $4.

Saturday’s events begin with a flag ceremony at 6:30 a.m. at the Alpine City Hall. The firefighters breakfast will be served beginning at 6:40 a.m. in the tent at the city park. The cost is $16 per family or $3 for adults and $2.50 for children.

The 5K run/walk will begin at city hall at 7 a.m. and the mountain bike race will begin at 6:30 a.m. at 200 North and 100 East with three categories: expert, sport and beginner, each with its own course.

The DUP bake sale, the around-the-block toddler trot, the art and craft show, the quilt and textile show, the art gallery, small town games in the park, entertainment, historic Moyle Park tours, an auction and a family dinner and entertainment are scheduled throughout the day. The parade will start at 10 a.m., beginning on Main Street at Canyon Crest Road.

The “Pure Bull” rodeo will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lambert Park. Tickets are $7 for bleacher seating or $5 if you bring your own seat.

The fireworks will begin at 9 p.m. at Burgess Park. Parking is limited so those attending should be prepared to walk.

COUNTYWIDE

The Sheriff’s Office will hire four deputies and a sergeant to patrol the county’s recreation areas. County commissioners approved the positions Tuesday. Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy said Tuesday it will take between 30 to 45 days to hire people for the recreational team, and will start the hiring process within the next two weeks.

AMERICAN FORK

Work is continuing on upgrades to city parks. Kenny Hoggan, chair of the task force that created the plan for the improvements, said, “Work on the parks continues to move forward on schedule and will continue through the summer and into the fall.” The new North Park, at about 580 N. 650 West, has been started within the last month. It is going through final preparations to have hydroseeding done. In the last 30 days it has been graded, had sprinklers installed and playground equipment, tables and benches placed. Other parks have had sprinklers, playground equipment, tables and benches installed.

CEDAR FORT

Cedar Fort’s Fire Station now has a blacktop parking lot thanks to a matching funds grant of $7,300 from the Utah County Elections Office. The Cedar Fort Fire Department paid the additional money to finish the parking lot using money received from fighting fires in the county. Handicapped voters in wheelchairs will now have easier access to the polling place in the fire station.

CEDAR HILLS

Volunteers are needed for the Park and Trails Committee and the Golf Course Advisory Committee. Interested residents need to get an application from the City Recorder, Kim Holindrake, at the City Office, 3825 W. Cedar Hills Drive. Applications will be accepted until Aug. 31.

EAGLE MOUNTAIN

There will be an open house for Eagle Valley Elementary School on Aug. 20 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants can tour the new school, meet the teachers and help choose community council members, the school mascot and the school color.

EUREKA

The annual Dividend reunion will be Aug. 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Tintic Elks Lodge at 285 W. Main. Former residents of Dividend are invited to enjoy the Tintic Festival in Eureka before the reunion. HIGHLAND

Joe Colisimo requested preliminary approval at the July 20 Highland Planning Commission meeting for five lots on 5 acres on 4720 West at about 10700 North. One lot is to be accessed by a private drive that was required to be surfaced. Chair Steve Draper advised Colisimo to negotiate with adjacent landowner, Grant Bangerter, to share improvements on the road, which will be constructed between the two properties. “If you do not get an easement from Mr. Bangerter you will be required to put in the entire road on your property,” Draper said.

LEHI

The Lehi Arts in the Park concert series will feature Hindsight and Stephanie Smith Sunday at Wines Park, 600 N. 100 East. The event is free to the public and the audience is invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

LINDON

The City Council continued a public hearing Aug. 3 on amending Lindon’s high density housing ordinance. Planning director Kevin Smith said July 6 that with about 400 affordable dwellings — including condos, apartments and houses — people probably couldn’t argue Lindon doesn’t meet the state’s requirement for a mix of housing. Smith asked if it might be time to concentrate efforts for affordable housing on the west side, zoning it for smaller single-family lots.

PROVO

The American Institute of Medical-Dental Technology is celebrating its 25th anniversary Thursday, from noon to 2 p.m. Students, faculty, alumni, and the public are invited to join in the celebration. It will be held at the Provo campus located at 1675 N. Freedom Boulevard, building 5.

SARATOGA SPRINGS

A zoning change from agricultural to commercial for North Saratoga Center, located at 9100 N. Redwood Road. just north of the Harvest Hills Development, containing 12.15 acres and five lots was recommended for approval, subject to staff and engineering findings at the Aug. 3 planning meeting.

SPANISH FORK

Nebo Young Parents will be registering new students Aug. 16 and 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day at 624 S. 820 East in Spanish Fork. The school is open to students up to age 19 from Nebo School District and surrounding districts that are either expecting a child or are the primary caretaker of their young child and have not graduated from high school. If students are not able to register on the designated dates or have other questions, they can call Marthanne Argyle, program manager, at 794-0065.

SPRINGVILLE

Residents of Springville and Mapleton are invited to participate in the 21st Annual Sunday At the Park on Sunday at Rotary Park in Hobble Creek Canyon. The event, sponsored each year by the Springville Rotary Club, raises money for community projects sponsored by the club. A rib-eye steak dinner will be served from 12:30 to 3 p.m. along with prizes, an antique car show and live music. Tickets are available at the T-Bone, SOS Drug, Fakler Tire, Provo and from any Rotary member.
