Orem police beat
FALSE INFORMATION/WARRANT — An 18-year-old Orem man was booked into the Utah County Jail Monday after Officer Travis Anderson stopped a black Land Rover Monday in the area of 500 N. 800 West for a traffic violation. The driver told Anderson that he didn’t have identification with him and that his name was Kory. The officer became suspicious because the young man’s work shirt had the name Colton on it. When that was pointed out, the man became nervous enough to convince the officer he must be lying about his name. It was discovered that “Kory” was really Colton Davis, who had a suspended drivers license and a warrant of arrest out on him for contempt of court. He was arrested and booked into the Utah County jail.
ASSAULT — Two white men were walking into Rancheritos (formerly Betos) at 66 W. Center Street early Saturday morning, May 10, when they were accosted by 19-year-old Adam Sisouphanh, of Orem, and 20-year-old Makolson Antoine, of Provo. A witness, unassociated with either group, called the police to report the fight. He told officers that Antoine and Sisouphanh had tried to start a fight with him too but he refused to get out of his car. When the officers arrived and got things sorted out, they found that Sisouphanh and Antoine were the agressors in the situation. Antoine’s girlfriend had been trying to get Antoine out of the fight and told officers, referring to Sisouphanh and Antoine, “These guys love to fight.” Sisouphanh and Antoine were arrested and booked into the Utah County jail on charges of assault, disorderly conduct, and unlawful possession of alcohol by consumption.
Lt. Doug Edwards said Sisouphanh reportedly seemed none too worried about facing possible charges, but rather, wanted to know what the officers were going to do with his Lincoln. Antoine, on the other hand, was very concerned about being charged and kept wanting the officers to tell him whether this incident would hurt or prevent him from attending the Utah Police Academy he was hoping to attend.
DRUNK DRIVER/HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT — Dispatch received a call Saturday morning, May 10, at 6 a.m. from the Mercedes Response Center indicating an airbag deployment in the area of North Canyon Hills Drive and Pembroke Circle in Orem. The Response Center requested police officers check on the welfare of the car and driver. Officers responded to the area and found evidence of a recent accident in which a vehicle had hit a retaining wall. Following a trail of leaking engine fluid from the accident scene to a home on Lancaster Way, they believed the vehicle had pulled into a now closed garage.
Officers spent some time trying to get someone to answer the door, but finally 30-year-old Owen Williams stumbled to door and let officers in. Williams was obviously very intoxicated. He allowed officers to examine the car in the garage, which showed recent front end damage. Williams said he couldn’t remember anything until he opened the door for the officers. Williams was arrested for drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident. He was booked into the Orem holding facility and later bailed out.
DRUNK DRIVER/HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT — A report of a hit and run accident was received Sunday night. May 11, at 9:18 p.m. at 800 N. 800 East. The suspect vehicle, a silver pickup truck, refused to stop at the accident scene and was last scene southbound on Palisade Drive.
Officer Steve Reece spotted the suspect vehicle westbound on Center Street and watched the driver make a high speed turn to go north on 800 East. Officer Reece got behind the vehicle, that was now traveling between 40 and 50 mph on 800 East. He verified by the license number that this was the vehicle in the hit and run. Officer Reece turned on his overhead lights and siren and attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to stop the truck. The truck turned east on 200 North and then north on 1000 East and finally into a cul-de-sac in the area of 350 N. 1000 East.
The driver of the truck, 37-year-old Mark Campbell, of Spanish Fork, staggered out of the truck and refused to cooperate with commands from Officer Reece and Officer Del Davis, who had arrived to assist. Campbell remained uncooperative throughout.
Officers said Campbell was obviously intoxicated … so much so that he was completely unsteady on his feet and had both wet and soiled his trousers. Campbell was booked on charges of DUI, Evading, and Leaving the scene of an accident. There were no reported injuries due to the accident.
ROBBERY — Two juvenile boys, ages 15 and 17, were walking on Orem Boulevard Wednesday afternoon, May 8, at about 2 p.m. when they were confronted by another Hispanic man on foot wearing a bandana over his face and wielding a handgun. The suspect demanded drugs. When the victims said they had no drugs, the suspect ordered one of the victims to remove his shoes and coat. The suspect took the items and got into a purple van that pulled up and left the area.
Officer Chris Watson got the call on the robbery and remembered a recent case involving some criminal mischief and a suspect van matching that description. Officer Tom Wallace, patrolling in the area of 375 W. 310 N. , spotted the van in a driveway with a Hispanic man sitting next to it. He detained 23-year-old Sergio Vasquez-Hernandez, who said he was the owner of the van. Officer Watson brought the two victims to the residence and they immediately identified the van as being the one the suspect had gotten into after robbing them.
Officers and investigators attempted the make contact with occupants of the apartment but no one would answer the door. Officers staged around the location and a search warrant was being written for the residence and van when 18-year-old Ismael Ruiz came out of the apartment. The two victims positively identified Ruiz as the suspect who pointed the gun at them. Ruiz admitted to officers what he had done, saying the gun have been given to him by Vasquez-Hernandez. Officers were able to get back the stolen property, as well as retrieve the bb handgun and bandana used in the robbery.
Sergio Vasquez-Hernandez and Ismael Ruiz were booked into the Utah County jail on suspicion of robbery charges. Both men have allegedly been associated with gangs in the past, as well as at least one of the juvenile victims.
