Utah Career College has a new name
Another college in the Utah County community has announced a name change and added advanced degree programs to its curriculum.
Utah Career College changed its name Tuesday to Broadview University, reflecting the school’s recent growth, including the addition of its first graduate degree, a Master of Science in Management with emphasis in Information Technology.
Founded in 1977, the Orem campus of the school is one of three currently in Utah. Broadview University is a member of Globe Education Network, a consortium of career colleges and schools that cooperate to offer students more choices in pursuing their postsecondary education. The Globe network started in 1887 with the Minnesota School of Business, and now there are more than 21 schools in four states in the consortium. Globe will also open its first Idaho school in Boise next spring, according to Bob Trewartha, director of campus programs and promotions. In addition to the three schools currently in Utah — in Orem, West Jordan and Layton — Broadview will open a campus in Salt Lake City this October. “We started the Utah Career College because Utah was seen as an up-and-coming state.” Trewartha said. “We have a lot of working adults attending the university. The average age is 27, and almost everyone has some level of employment.”
Trewartha said the new master’s degree “is a way to help people with career aspirations. Getting a master’s degree used to be a luxury. Now, it is more and more necessary.”
There are more than 1,500 students combined at the three Utah schools. The new Salt Lake campus will offer four Bachelor of Fine Arts programs in sequential imaging, graphic design, game art and entertainment design. Other programs at the Utah schools include human resources, marketing and finances and business and social media is being added. Classes are also taught in technology, medical and paralegal programs and more.
Dee Ann Kerr is the new regional director for all Broadview University campuses. Kerr has many years of experience working in the career college sector, including the last 15 years with Globe Education Network. Kerr will play a key role in Broadview University’s expansion plans.
“In 2010, it became clear that the name Utah Career College no longer reflected everything we offer,” Kerr said. “With the addition of our graduate degree to our existing range of diverse programs, the term ‘university’ best describes our growing institution.”
Broadview University is nationally accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, and qualifies for federal financial aid and student loans.
