Woman given jail time for sexual abuse of teen
A 40-year-old woman was sentenced to 270 days in jail Tuesday for sexually abusing a boy when he was 15 and 16.
Becky Rivers pleaded guilty in March to unlawful sexual activity with a minor and unlawful sexual conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old, both third-degree felonies. She also pleaded guilty to two Class A misdemeanor charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old.
Judge Lynn Davis varied from a recommendation from Adult Probation and Parole for no jail time, saying there appears to have been grooming in the case. Davis said the difference in age between Rivers and the boy in the case is critical, and a very vulnerable child was targeted.
“This type of activity cannot be tolerated in our community,” he said.
Davis issued a 270-day sentence for each charge, but allowed them to run concurrently. Rivers will also have 36 months of probation and is now registered as a sex offender.
Prosecutors say Rivers engaged in a sexual relationship with the teenage son of a friend between July 2008 and September 2009.
The boy’s mother spoke at Rivers’s sentencing, saying her son was groomed by Rivers beginning when he was 14.
She said it was traumatic for her son, who was told by Rivers he would tear his family apart if he told anyone about the abuse.
The woman asked the judge not to let gender play a part in his sentence and to treat Rivers as he would a male offender.
“This is just as traumatic to boys as it is to young women,” she said.
Rivers’s attorney, Carolyn Howard, said Rivers wants the families and victim in the case to know she is sorry. Howard said Rivers has been through personal trials that may have played a role in the abuse, but she is not excusing her actions.
“She is extremely sorry for her actions and does not present any excuse to the court,” she said.
Rivers sobbed during her sentencing and apologized to the family.
She said she feels remorse for what she did to the boy and thinks about it daily.
“I wish I could take it back, but I can’t,” she said. “All I can do is do what is in my power to move forward and be a better person.”
